Poll: Have Changes at WHS and Edison Eased Parking Woes?

Is the new parking arrangement improving conditions around the schools?

After a summer of construction at the Westfield High School and Edison Intermediate School parking lots, Westfielders were able to give the new parking arrangement a test drive as schools opened Wednesday, Sept. 5. Following years of complaints by neighborhood residents who found the high concentration of cars and traffic in the area both inconvenient and unsafe, the Westfield Town Council and Board of Education worked together with the public to arrive at a solution that they believe represents a compromise on all sides.  Changes in and around WHS included the high school lot expansion along Rahway Avenue, which was expected to add 33 new parking spots. Restriping in the Westfield Armory parking lot was anticipated to yield 19 new parking…

One thing is for sure...more parking spots means more cars and congestion on Rahway Ave - the last thing we need. How did we manage last year without those spots? We should be encouraging kids to walk/ride to school. No need for helicopter parents to drive them the 1/2 mile to school.   more ›

Photos: Parking Changes Ongoing at Edison and WHS

Construction trucks were busy at Edison Intermediate School.

Construction is underway at both Westfield High School and Edison Intermediate School as the parking expansion project continues. Trees and grass have been removed to make way for additional parking spots as well as a bus entrance. Plans were outlined in a public outreach meeting held on April 18, in which recommendations were made by a town-appointed traffic engineer and with subsequent approval by both the Board of Education and the Town Council. The proposal was developed to alleviate traffic and on-street parking issues as well as to promote safety around both schools.
