Customers at Alan's Orchard are seeing red. Strawberry and tomato red, that is. The Quimby Street market is brimming with fresh, seasonal produce arriving daily as Fresh Box season begins. Alan's Orchard Fresh Box program, a service in which those enrolled receive a recyclable box of fruits and vegetables every week, has more than doubled in participants since last season. "We now have 400 customers picking up Fresh Boxes each week," said Alan Weinberg, owner and chief freshness officer. "We added 220 people and we have 250 on a waiting list. It's not advertised; it's just from people loving it." This week's harvest included New Jersey-grown strawberries, asparagus, tomatoes, spinach, red leaf lettuce, arugula, sweet potatoes, kale, …

Friday is Donut Day at Alan's Orchard

From now until winter, cider donuts will be available every Friday.

Looking to start your day with sweet treat? Friday is Cider Donut Day at Alan's Orchard from now until winter. The coveted confections are delivered by 10:30 a.m. every Friday and will begin arriving by 9:30 a.m. once Fresh Box season starts in May.  "They are from Francesca’s Bakery, which bakes the donuts using local apple cider and you can find these donuts at the NYC Greenmarket’s in Manhattan and Brooklyn," Fred Logue, manager at Alan's Orchard, said. While Logue's personal favorite is the jelly-filled cider donut, priced at $1.25,  he said "the plain cider donut is really, really good too." "We definitely have our regular customers for the donuts each week," Logue added. "It’s a special treat."

Shop at Alan's Orchard, CoolVines, Savory Spice Shop and Williams Sonoma and receive a 10 percent off coupon to be used that day.

Four businesses in downtown Westfield have joined forces to give shoppers a midweek break. Customers who make a purchase at Alan's Orchard, CoolVines, Savory Spice Shop and Williams Sonoma on Wednesdays will receive a 10 percent off coupon that they can use at any one of the other stores throughout the day.  "We had been talking to Alan (Alan Weinberg from Alan's Orchard) and Lauren (Ramos) and Damon (O'Gara, both from Coolvines) about doing something like this for quite some time now," said Becky Solheim, who co-owns Savory Spice Shop with her sister Jackie Mittelhammer. "After the holidays we were able to start focusing on our co-marketing ideas and the coupon was brought to life. Between our four shops we seem to have a similar customer…

This is a creative idea. I try to frequent the independent downtown shops as much as possible - especially this time of year when the spring produce hits - I can make a whole meal from Alan's Orchard & Savory Spice shop (and of course wine from Cool Vines). Bovella's should jump in ... I need a macaroon after this dinner I am going to make :)   more ›

Make Your Super Bowl Spread Super Delicious

Get your Super Bowl party started with recipes and recommendations from local businesses.

For many, the food and beverages served during the Super Bowl are just as anticipated as the half-time show, the commercials and even the game itself. Those hosting a party can take comfort knowing that traditional football party fare is just a phone call away as local restaurants offer a variety of catering options.  Jack Kasich of The Robert Treat Delicatessen said popular items ordered so far this season include buffalo wings, sloppy joes and three-foot subs. The deli owner said business "absolutely" increases when a local team makes it this far in the season, "especially when it's the Giants." "We haven't had that many huge orders, but we've had a lot of small ones," he said. "It's really been picking up since yesterday (Wednesday)." …

Wine Recommendations for a Spirited Holiday Season

Damon O'Gara of Cool Vines shared his selections for celebrating the holidays in style.

If you've been wondering what to serve alongside your holiday roast or what to pour as you're ringing in the new year, Damon O'Gara, wine buyer at Cool Vines, has some suggestions. "We're celebrating and it's fun to keep that in mind," he said. "This whole season is about rejoicing. As much as it is stressful and as much of a media circus as this has become, on the last day or however many days you celebrate, it's about family." To truly get in the celebratory spirit, O'Gara recommends a sparkling wine. "The trend in the wine world right now, especially in champagne, is grower champagne," O'Gara …
