Board of Ed Approves Resolution Addressing Net Loss in State Aid

Legislation Committee Chair, Ann Ormsby Cary, says after accounting for Westfield’s increased SDA assessment, "our district will experience a decrease in State Aid for Fiscal 2014 of $75,229."

To the Editor: The Westfield Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution opposing the Schools Development Authority assessments in the State Budget that will be sent to the Governor and our legislators.    According to the nonpartisan Office of Legislative Services, in its annual analysis of the Governor's proposed budget, almost half of New Jersey school districts will see a net loss in State Aid due to the construction grant fees or Schools Development Authority assessments.  Westfield is one of these districts.  As you will all remember, Westfield’s State Aid was increased by one dollar for the coming year. Westfield Schools Introducing STEM Camp

In a continuing effort to engage students in activities integrating the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), the Westfield Public School district is introducing a week-long summer workshop for grades 3 – 8 devoted to STEM.  Taught by Westfield teachers, it will be held July 8 -12 at Edison Intermediate School with a daily schedule from 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM. Workshops will include robotics, science technology, rocketry, Computer Aided Design (CAD), movie making and stop motion animation, and Scratch Programming (Fundamentals for Kids).  “Students will receive a high quality learning experience with state-of-the-art equipment and software,” added David Stoneback, Supervisor of K-12 Science.  Tuition is $250 per …

Commissioner of Education Recognizes Westfield Students/Teachers in Trenton Ceremony

Superintendent Margaret Dolan said she was proud of the district's honorees.

New Jersey Commissioner of Education Christopher D. Cerf personally congratulated representatives from the Westfield Public Schools for "a significant contribution to school, community, family or other groups." The event was held on May 15 in Trenton at the New Jersey State Board of Education’s Annual Student Recognition Ceremony.  The Community Service Club of Westfield High School was presented a certificate for the Club’s continuous volunteer efforts over the past 7 years to provide assistance locally, statewide, and internationally to those in need. This year, students have served meals to homeless families in Newark and organized games and crafts with the young children; took part in hurricane-relief efforts by organizing donations of…

Westfield School District Art Show Open to Public

A sampling of hundreds of artwork created by students representing all 10 public schools and grades ranging from kindergarten through twelfth will be on display at the annual show.

The public is invited to attend the 29th annual Westfield Public School District’s Fine Arts Show, which will be held in the Westfield High School varsity gymnasium from May 14 - 16.  A sampling of hundreds of artwork created by students representing all 10 public schools and grades ranging from kindergarten through twelfth will be on display at the annual show. Westfield Public Schools Participate in Project Child Find

Children found to be eligible for special education and related services are entitled to a free and appropriate special education program and related services.

The Westfield Public School District recognizes the importance of providing services to children with special needs through its Project Child Find efforts.  According to Dr. Michael Weissman, Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Services, “We provide evaluation services for resident children 3 to 21 years of age who appear to have problems in communication, motor, social-emotional, or learning areas.” Screening and evaluation services are available to preschoolers (3-5); to highly mobile students with disabilities, such as migrant and homeless students; and to students who may be disabled even though they are advancing from grade to grade. Westfield School District Addresses State School Report Card

Westfield High School receives high marks for college and career readiness.

The state of New Jersey Department of Education issued its NJ Schools performance report last week. The report scores schools statewide in three major categories: Academic achievement, College & Career Readiness and Graduation & Post-secondary. It compares the schools within each district to "peer schools." In Union County, Westfield's peer school for elementary grades is Berkeley Heights; for middle grade levels, peer schools include Mountainside, New Providence, and Scotch Plains-Fanwood; high school peers are Cranford, Scotch Plains-Fanwood and Clark high schools, the report states. Public Invited to Westfield School Spring Musical and Concerts

School district has 31 musical concerts scheduled for May and June.

The Fine Arts Department of the Westfield Public Schools invites the public to attend any of the 31 musical concerts scheduled for this spring.  Approximately 2,500 students in grades kindergarten through high school will be performing district-wide.  All concerts are free.  School addresses are available on the district website at www.westfieldnjk12.org.   The dates and locations for the spring concerts are listed below. In addition, Edison Intermediate School students will be performing their Spring musical, The Wizard of Oz on Thursday, April 11 – 4:00 pm; Friday, April 12 – 7:30 pm; and Saturday, April 13 – 7:30 pm. Westfield Schools Superintendent Proud of Recent Student Accomplishments

Students achievements range from STEM and literature to diplomacy and athletics.

Dear Editor, I would like to share with our community many of the recent accomplishments of Westfield Public School students. We have barely passed the midpoint of the school year, and already milestones have been achieved. As our school district moves forward in our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) initiative, our students are achieving success in and out of the classroom. In three different challenging science competitions, our Science Olympiad teams from Edison, Roosevelt and Westfield High School captured top regional awards and progressed to the state level of competition. Westfield School District Sees $1 State Aid Increase for 2013-2014

Board of Ed meets to talk budget next on Tuesday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m.

The Westfield School District will receive $1 more in state aid than it did last year, according to the NJ Department of Education, which released state aid numbers Thursday afternoon. While the proposed Fiscal Year 2014 Budget released today represents the largest appropriation of K-12 education dollars in the state's history, state aid to the District of Westfield for 2013-14 will total $2,832,317, a zero percent increase over the 2012-2013 figure, which saw a 32.4 percent increase over the 2011-2012 school year.  The nearby Cranford district also remained flat to last year while the Mountainside district received a 1.2 percent increase.
