Washington School Students Experience the Garden State

1st through 5th Graders at Washington School Learn in School's Unique Outdoor Garden

This week, Washington School students were able to begin experiencing spring in the school’s outdoor garden.  The Washington School Garden was started four years ago by parent volunteer (and master gardener) Lorraine Mormile, with the support of principal Andy Perry, who allowed Mormile to select the outdoor space and work with the teachers. The Washington School Garden offers the school’s students a unique opportunity to learn about nature in a hands-on way. In grade-appropriate lessons taught with students and teachers outside in the garden, Mormile teaches about basic botany, entomology, composting, soil science, and more. She does what she can to make the lessons fun for the kids (she even ends by giving students a “farmer’s handshake…

Washington and Tamaques Teachers Take to the Court for Charity

Teachers from Washington and Tamaques Elementary Schools meet on volleyball court to raise money for Westfield Rescue Squad

Teachers from Washington and Tamaques Elementary Schools battled Wednesday night at Westfield High School, for a series of three volleyball games that raised funds for the Westfield Rescue Squad. With the near deafening roar of hundreds of the schools’ students in the background, Tamaques teachers quickly scored first, and went on to defeat Washington’s teachers 25-9 in the first game. Tamaques School led off the second game with another quick point, and was soon nearly 10 points ahead of the Washington teachers.  With teacher Mike Bukowsky serving, Washington quickly racked up several points and made a comeback to win the second game 27-24. But the Tamaques Tigers pulled ahead again, with a 25-15 win in the third game against the …

Washington School Students Take a Journey Through Science

Washington Elementary School PTO sponsored a Science Fair

Students at Washington Elementary School explored the solar system, studied static electricity, and observed tiny organisms through microscopes at the Washington School Science Fair on March 13. Event coordinator and parent Ginger Clarke-Walden said, “Every year, we have a Washington School show that raises a lot of money. The science fair is a nice way to give back to the school community.” With over 25 booths, students had the opportunity to participate in a large variety of fun activities, from measuring how much iron is in breakfast cereal to studying the stars in the sky. Other stations taught students about DNA, radioactivity, insects, minerals, computers, dentistry, and germs. At check-in, students received a passport that would …

Washington School's 'Toy HiSTORY': A Lesson in Fun

A good time from start to finish

The 66th annual Washington School show opened last night to the delight of audience members of all ages.  'Toy HiSTORY,' with a clever script written by John Schwartz, follows historical action figures George Washington, Amelia Earhart, General Patton, Cleopatra, Joan of Arc and Elvis Presley as they try to escape from the Sunshine Daycare Center. The dolls, mistakenly donated as part of a toy drive, need to find their way home before they end up in the clutches of the Toddler Room's terror: Terrible Timmy, played to great comedic effect by Kip Brindle, Washington's PTO co-president. Hilarity ensues as the group bumps into the likes of Al Capone and Lucky Luciano, who wow the crowd with a mob-inspired version of 'My Favorite Things' or as …

A Cup of Coffee With Mitch Slater

The Board of Education member likes to give back to the community any way he can.

Westfield resident Mitch Slater has been volunteering on behalf of the town's children since before he had any of his own. The father of two and Board of Education member began his two decades of service to the community by coaching Little League with fellow Board member Mark Friedman when he first moved to Westfield 21 years ago. "That was so much fun," said Slater. "Mark's the first guy I met when I moved to Westfield." Elected to the Board in 2010, Slater said he has enjoyed the whole experience, from campaigning, with the help of his daughter who provided creative assistance, right up to the present day. Slater feels optimistic about the direction of the Board, particularly after interviewing candidates at the last public meeting on …
