Veterans Day: Traditionally Sunday, Celebrated Monday

No matter the calendar date, it is a day of remembrance and thanks.

Sunday is officially Veterans Day, a time to recognize and honor those who have served in our nation’s military. Have you thanked the veterans you know? This year, since Veterans Day falls on a weekend, it will be officially commemorated Monday, Nov. 12.  The Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed "November 11" as the first remembrance of the end of the Great War: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the …

The Long Road Home

Use this day as it's meant to be, in celebration of the men and women who fight for the many freedoms we take for granted.

What’s your favorite part of Veteran’s Day?  A)  I get a day off from work! B)   I finally can get 20 percent off that awesome smart-foam mattress I must have! C)  Hundreds of thousands of men and women have fought tirelessly to ensure that my biggest dilemma is voting for A or B.                 When President Woodrow Wilson signed into law the creation of Armistice Day, it was to be for a two-minute suspension of business, observed at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1919 — the one-year anniversary of the end of World War I, “The War to End All Wars.” In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law Veterans Day to replace Armistice Day in order to recognize the more than 400,000 soldiers who lost their lives in World War II and the Korean…

About Town

About Town: Celebrating Our Brave Soldiers

Intermediate schools celebrate the role of the U.S. Armed Services in separate ceremonies

Happy Veterans Day Westfield. As we go around town today, let's all remember the hard work and sacrifices of everyone who has served our country in the United States Armed Forces. They have worked hard on our behalf and, while we should keep them in our hearts every day, today is a day to remember what they have done. Here is a look at what is going on About Town. SCHOOLS HONOR VETERANS Today, both of Westfield's intermediate schools are planning Veteran's Day ceremonies to honor those who have worked hard to protect and serve our country in times of war. The Edison Intermediate School assembly, which has been a tradition for years, starts at 9:50 a.m. It will include retired Marine Patrick Tuohy, speaking along with retired Army nurse …
