Union workers officially went on strike early this week.
Verizon Communications and Fios employees say they don't want anything new, they only want to retain the salary levels, benefits and vacation days they already have. That was the message they were trying to send Monday as they carried signs in front of the Verizon building on Orange Avenue. "We're fighting for job security, health benefits and our pensions," said Tim Ridel, of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 827, who was striking with fellow union members early this week. Union officials claim the company wants to end middle class jobs; Verizon says the union won't agree to health care givebacks.
In what is quickly becoming a war of words between both sides, Verizon Communications and Fios employees are on the verge of a strike. The company says it is seeking health care givebacks to account for the changing face of the telecommunications industry as more consumers go wireless. But union officials say Verizon has plenty of money and are only attacking middle class jobs. Verizon employees who work on the wire lines, represented by the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, have voted to allow union leaders to authorize a strike as soon as the current contract expires at 12:01 a.m. Sunday. Smaller sign constructed than proposed.
The Board of Adjustment Monday night voted to approve a variance for Verizon Wireless to add a third sign on the east facing wall of their building, smaller than the one first proposed by the phone store. The board said that the original proposal, which included a 28.53 square foot sign, was not acceptable. According to the town ordinance, corner lots are allowed to have a second sign with dimensions no greater than 10 feet by 1.5 feet with a total square footage of 15 feet. The proposed sign was nearly twice that number. Thanks for your response, Jim. So since other companies have screwed workers even worse, Verizon’s workforce should accept cuts while the company’s prospering and its executives overpay themselves? Next thing you know, because Chris Christie should go on a diet we’ll expect starving people to cut down on how much they eat.   more ›
