Just three hours after opening its doors on Thursday, Urban Outfitters was already bustling with shoppers who stopped in to check out the retailer on its first day. Renovations are taking place on the corner of East Broad and Elm Streets in downtown Westfield.
Attention shoppers: Downtown Westfield will have another offering just in time for the holiday season. Urban Outfitters, the international retailer, is expected to open at 154 East Broad Street this December. The chain, with nearby shops in Montclair and Edison, is known for selling men's and women's apparel in addition to a wide selection of quirky gift items and home furnishings. Applicant primarily seeks relief to allow for non-storage uses in building's basement.
The Westfield Zoning Board of Adjustment unanimously approved the application submitted by international retailer Urban Outfitters at a special meeting held Wednesday evening. A resolution will be adopted at the Board of Adjustment's April 9th meeting. Sherry Cronin, executive director of the Downtown Westfield Corporation, said the approval is "a major coup" for Westfield. The applicant, Poly C LLC and Serf Realty LLC, is seeking variance relief for its use of the property at 154 East Broad Street. The most significant request for relief deals with allowing the tenant to use the basement for certain non-storage uses. On Jan. 26 Westfield Patch asked residents 'What Would You Put in Place of Talbots?' and 42 percent of those who responded voted for a brew pub. One week later, Patch queried 'What Would You Put in Place of Haven Savings?' and 50 percent of voters chose to put a brew pub in the vacant building if it were possible. When we took a look at international retailer Urban Outfitters possibly occupying the building at 154 E.
