Sure, school is back in session, but the kids don't have to be the only ones hitting the books this month.
Although Labor Day marks the last hurrah for white pants, barbeques and kids up late on a Sunday night, it is not the end of the season. Not sure what to read for your last hurrah of summer? Fear not, we've cobbled together some best-sellers from The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, along with a few staff favorites from summers past. Fiction Non-fiction In case you missed it, Anne Laird, owner of The Town Book Store in Westfield, also made some summer reading …

While the racy, best-selling "Fifty Shades" triology sparked a reading frenzy earlier this year, those aren't the only books to toss in your beach bag this summer, according to Anne Laird, owner of Town Book Store. In her time as the East Broad Street shop's proprietor, Laird said she hasn't seen anything quite like the popularity of E.L. James' erotic tales, which have sold more than 31 million copies worldwide. For those bitten by the bookworm, she has some alternate reading suggestions. "There really isn’t anything like 'Fifty Shades'…honestly…in all my years I have never seen a book like that or a book take off like that," Laird said. "I don’t really carry erotica in the store and if 'Fifty Shades' hadn’t become the blockbuster that it…

Do students deserve a complete break from the books or is summer reading a great way to keep up their skills?
Summer vacation begins in less than one week but will students still hit the books over the break? Patch recently partnered with best-selling author James Patterson to promote summer reading by offering some suggestions hand-picked by Patterson. Reading lists are broken into four age-appropriate categories: While schools across the nation have summer reading mandates, the Westfield school district does not require students to read selected titles during the break. That's a policy Westfield Board of Education member Mitch Slater would like to see change going forward. Slater said he thinks reading over the summer "makes perfect sense." "It helps kids keep their skills up and help them avoid what is called 'Summer Reading Loss' which makes …
