The Westfield Special Education Committee discussed changes in the district over the summer and what to look forward to in the future.
On Wednesday, Sept. 12, the members of Westfield’s Special Education Committee met for the first time this year at Edison Intermediate School. The meeting’s purpose was to highlight the accomplishments and goals of special education programs within the district. To begin, committee representatives highlighted the changes within Westfield public schools. The year’s budget focused on advancing technology. Now, wireless internet has been added to all the buildings, along with updated computers and refurbished tech rooms. In addition, lockers were added to many of the schools and parking lots were expanded. The Westfield Parent Teacher Council-Special Education Committee, in recognition of our opening meeting of the year tonight, welcomes Dr. Michael Weissman, Assistant Superintendant of Pupil Services for the Westfield Public Schools. Dr. Weissman, along with Ms. Andrea Lo, Supervisor of Special Services, will discuss goals, and changes to the Westfield Special Education Department for the coming year. The program will take place between 7:30 and 9 p.m. at the library of Edison Intermediate School, 800 Rahway Avenue, Westfield. The program is free, open to the public and no registration is required. Under proposal, tax levy increases by 1.9 percent.
After weeks of presentations and discussions in public and months of gathering data and crunching numbers in private, the Westfield Board of Education Tuesday night finalized and approved the district’s proposed budget for the 2012-2013 school year. The total district budget will increase to $95,360,622, a 2.2 percent total budget increase from the 2011-2012 school year. However, that figure reflects a rise in revenue that includes additional support that is expected from non-tax sources of revenue, such as federal and state aid. Under the proposal, the tax levy would increase by 1.9 percent, allowing it to remain under the two percent state cap.
