How Generous Is Westfield?

A new study ranks the charitable giving of towns across the country. Find out how Westfield fared.

Westfield residents donate 2.7% of their annual income to charity. That's lower than the New Jersey average of 3.7%, according to How America Gives, a new study from The Chronicle of Philanthropy that rates each of the 28,725 zip codes in the U.S. by measuring income levels and charitable donations made by taxpayers. (The report used IRS tax record for 2008, the most recent year data was available.) Westfield ranked 3,185 for contributions, donating $36.5 million with a median family contribution of $4,055. The median income for Westfield was $152,132. Westfielders earning the least, in the $50,000 to $99,000 bracket, donated the greatest percentage at eight percent, while those earning between $100,000 to $199,000 contributed 3.4 percent …

Savory Spice Shop Shares Olympic Chicken Recipe

In the spirit of the Olympic games, try this gold-medal-worthy dish.

Made with Mt. Olympus Greek Seasoning found at East Broad Street's Savory Spice Shop, this Olympic Chicken goes great with the games! Ingredients: 4 medium sized chicken breasts ½ cup olive oil ¼ cup lemon juice ½ cup water 4 tbsp. Mt. Olympus Greek Seasoning 1-12 oz. can artichoke hearts, drained 1 cup pitted Kalamata olives 1 cup chicken broth ¼ cup white wine 2 tbsp. Greek yogurt salt and pepper to taste Directions: In a large zip-top bag combine chicken breasts, olive oil, lemon juice, water, and Mt. Olympus Greek Seasoning. Shake to combine. Let marinate for 3-6 hours. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Remove chicken from marinade. In a sauté pan, brown chicken on each side (about 2 minutes). Place in oven safe baking dish. Stuff artichoke…

Memorial Day BBQ and Beverage Suggestions

Business owners make food and drink recommendations and one even hosts a beer tasting!

If you're planning on hosting a barbecue to celebrate the long weekend, local merchants Savory Spice Shop and CoolVines are offering some suggestions to help get your party started.  Savory's co-owner Becky Solheim shared some of the East Broad Street shop's top recipes to ring in the unofficial start of summer.  Jerk Chicken: Ingredients: 6-9 tbsp. Jamaican Jerk Seasoning 3 tbsp. olive oil 3 tbsp. soy sauce 6 tbsp. vinegar 6 tbsp. orange juice 4 tbsp. lime juice 2 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken thighs Notes: To make an extra spicy jerk paste, bring remaining marinade, meat bits and all, to a boil in a sauce pan. Last Chance: Savory Spice Shop Hosts Raw Foods Class

Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, the demonstration and workshop begins at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

Space is still available for the Raw Foods demonstration and workshop at 7:30 p.m tonight at Savory Spice Shop.  Chef Zoe Vlakinova of RAWbundant shows attendees how to incorporate raw/vegan foods into their summertime menus. According to RAWbundant's website, the new line of premium living foods have been created by Chef Zoe. "We make our own signature products, free of sugar, dairy, gluten and soy. One hundred percent raw and vegan. All ingredients are plant-sourced and prepared under 115 degrees to keep intact the precious vitamins, minerals and enzymes," the website states. Cupcakes for a Cause: Every Purchase Supports Christian's Wish

CoolVines and Savory Spice Shop will be selling cupcakes starting at noon on Saturday, May 19 to help the family of Christian Panarese afford a new wheelchair.

Westfield merchants CoolVines and Savory Spice Shop have cooked up a delicious way to support the family of 13-year-old Christian Panarese, born with spastic quadraplegia, in their efforts to purchase a new wheelchair.  Starting at noon on Saturday, May 19, the businesses will be selling 300 cupcakes, prepared by pastry chef and Garwood resident Melissa Walsh, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Christian's Wish.  "We've already gotten a wonderful response from customers that we've told about the event," said Lauren Ramos of CoolVines.  Christian, a Westfield resident who attends Edison Intermediate School, lives with and is cared for by his grandparents Frank and Nancy Panarese. If you saw a mom leave two little girls at a toy store to go on a job interview would you speak up? What if she left them to go on a date? Would you mind your own business or intervene? That's the ethical dilemma producers posed to Thinka Dinka customers two weeks ago when ABC's hidden camera show 'What Would You Do?' filmed at the East Broad Street toy store. The episode will air at 9 p.m. Friday, May 18 on ABC. Co-owner Connie Van Epps said she and partner Ronald Tuchman were contacted by the crew from 'What Would You Do?' to see if they would be interested in having the show, hosted by John Quinones, film in their shop. Van Epps said she and Tuchman agreed it would be a fun experience.
