A group of Westfield students had the opportunity to experience the publishing industry first-hand in New York City in June. Penguin Classics book publishers hosted in their SoHo offices six Roosevelt Intermediate School students from Mr. Kalafat's 8th-grade Language Arts classes for a day of filming. “Penguin is creating a new eBook version of the John Steinbeck classic "Of Mice and Men" and has been contemplating ways to enhance the educator edition of the e-novel,” explained Kalafat. “Penguin felt that students discussing the themes of the novel and their reactions to those themes would be a good way to show how the book could be used in the classroom,” he added. Why Westfield students? Penguin took notice of a New York Times article …

Marc Nissim started his own landscaping business at the age of 15.
When Westfield resident Marc Nissim was in high school someone offered him some life-changing advice. A talented artist and an avid outdoorsman, Nissim was told he should consider combining those interests by pursuing a career in landscape architecture and that's exactly what he did. Nissim, originally from Princeton, will speak with three classes today at Roosevelt Intermediate School's Career Day. The owner and founder of Harmony Design Group has volunteered for this event in the past at both Roosevelt and his own Alma mater. He said he really enjoys meeting with the students and gets a kick out of their responses when he asks, "What do you think a landscape architect does?" "Some are close and some are not so close," Nissim said with a …

Teaching science to middle school students was the topic of conversation recently when teachers and administrators from the Westfield and Summit Public Schools met at Roosevelt Intermediate School in Westfield in a curriculum roundtable discussion. The group examined the Westfield spiral curriculum in science, which exposes students at Roosevelt and Edison Intermediate Schools to the four branches of science every year – Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, and Physics – and is built upon each of the following years. This approach reflects the recommendations of Project 2061 by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Science Teachers Association. The representatives from both school districts discussed the…

Eighth-graders from Roosevelt Intermediate School will travel to Cedarbrook K8 Center Plainfield to discuss John Steinbeck's 'Of Mice and Men.'
The theme of the American Dream in literature is one that transcends social and economic barriers, making it an ideal topic for discussion. At Roosevelt Intermediate School, approximately 65 eighth graders in Language Arts teacher Matthew Kalafat's classes are discussing the American Dream; both their vision of it as well as the way it is presented in John Steinbeck's classic novel 'Of Mice and Men.' While examining this work of literature and all its themes is nothing new, this year the classes have expanded their literacy circles beyond their four walls. On Tuesday, Jan. 17, the students will travel to Cedarbrook K8 Center in Plainfield to discuss the novel with their counterparts. The brainchild of Roosevelt Assistant Principal Derrick…
