Hats Off to Artists in Roosevelt Intermediate School

Students modeled custom-designed hats.

Sixth graders in Anne Cohen’s art class at Roosevelt Intermediate School in Westfield model their custom designed hats inspired from the New Era 59Fifty exhibition of award winning unique cap designs. Mrs. Cohen shared with her students a book published by New Era with 70 creative hats.  “The students were totally inspired to create their own one-of-a-kind creation,” explained Cohen.  “Each student was given a blank white cap and they were able to capture their own creative profile on it. Using a variety of materials -- paint, feathers, fabric, buttons, wood scraps and any other found objects they could find-- each student found his/her  path to define themselves visually,” she added.

Two Westfield Schools Named State 'Reward Schools'

Franklin Elementary and Roosevelt Intermediate schools commended for student achievement.

Two Westfield schools have been recognized among the highest-performing schools in New Jersey by the State Department of Education, officials said. Franklin Elementary and Roosevelt Intermediate schools were named as Reward Schools by the state this week. Only 57 schools received the recognition this year. Last year, 112 schools received these distinctions. The rankings are determined by analyzing data from the 2008-11 school years, including NJASK, HSPA and APA exams. High Performing Reward Schools are the highest performing in the state in terms of schoolwide proficiency and graduation rates.  "We are delighted to be a Rewards School earning the status of 'high-performing' school by the New Jersey Department of Education," said Franklin …

Science Awards for Roosevelt Students in Westfield

'Oh the Places You'll Go' When RIS Presents 'Seussical the Musical'

Performances begin Friday, March 8.

Even if you’ve never uttered the words “I do not like green eggs and ham,” the Roosevelt Intermediate School Theatre department, with a cast of 51, has cooked up a treat that will certainly appeal to your tastes.     'Seussical the Musical' is directed by Annie Brzozowski, choreographed by Nicole Amadeo and musically directed by Karen Romero and Sabino Losco. This musical extravaganza is filled with toe-tapping tunes.  'Seussical' borrows its plot directly from the characters and occurrences in various Dr. Seuss books. Westfield Public Schools Present Substance Abuse Prevention Parenting Program

Program begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 at Edison School.

The Counseling Department at Edison and Roosevelt Intermediate Schools will be hosting the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey’s (PDFNJ) 15 Minute Child Break program on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at Edison School. The 15 Minute Child Break is a ONE-HOUR multi-media presentation offered by the PDFNJ. The presentation will include  the importance of the parent or caregiver’s role on substance abuse prevention; as well as how to talk to children about drugs, signs of use and abuse to look for, current terminology, and trends of use.  The presentation is based on New Jersey specific research conducted by the PDFNJ’s Center for Prevention Research. Roosevelt Student Council Aids Sandy Victims

Funds were donated by Roosevelt families and staff to support local efforts in helping victims of Hurricane Sandy

Student Council Advisors at Roosevelt Intermediate School in Westfield, Lori Simpson (far left) and Marisa Conneely, present a check in the amount of $856 to Westfield United Fund Executive Director, Deirdre Gelinne.  The funds were donated by Roosevelt families and staff to support local efforts in helping victims of Hurricane Sandy through the United Fund’s Sandy Relief Program. Roosevelt Principal, Stewart Carey, acknowledged, “It is the appropriate thing to do; every little bit helps.”

RIS's Independent Study Offers Students New Opportunities

Students' activities span a wide range of interests.

The motto “You are free to learn” seemed to hover in the air on Wednesday as eighth graders at Roosevelt Intermediate School gathered in the library for the first Independent Study meeting of the year. Excited participants’ voices and giggles reflected the enthusiastic smiles of their high school mentors who were partnered up with their younger peers based on similar strengths and interests. Independent Study, created by Westfield alumna Alexa Zepka during her eighth grade year at RIS, was her response to being rejected from another extra-curricular program, according to current coordinator, WHS junior Rebecca Plotkin. Vets Not Forgotten by Westfield Students

Social Studies Teacher, Brian Vieth, presented the Heroes Among Us Award to guest speaker and Veteran Patrick Boyer.

A Veteran’s Day Ceremony, rescheduled due to Hurricane Sandy, was held at Roosevelt Intermediate School in Westfield on November 19.  Music – including the National Anthem, America and Blowin’ in the Wind -- was provided by the Sharps and Flats, the 8th Grade Chorus, and the Eighth Grade Band.  The entire student body of more than 700 students, as well as teachers and guests, remained silent while Taps was played by Brian Callahan and Creighton Hendrix. Roosevelt School Presents 'Get Smart' Nov. 16-18

The play has been rescheduled for this coming weekend.

The comedy ‘Get Smart!’ is being presented by a cast of over 30 Westfield students and a crew of 20 at Roosevelt Middle School on Friday and Saturday, November 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 18 at 2 p.m.  Come watch Maxwell Smart, played Liam Kudlick, assisted by beautiful Agent 99, played by Meagan O’Connell, as he embarks on a bizarre new case in which he must stop the sinister organization known as KAOS from their most shameful plot. Their plan this time is to prove their power by blowing up the Statue of Liberty!
