Westfield Resident to BOE: 'You Took Away Our Freedom of Choice'

A neighborhood outreach meeting was held to discuss the proposed lighted turf field at Westfield High School.

In a heated three-and-a-half-hour meeting, a large group of Westfield residents let Board of Education members know not only are they unhappy about the proposed installation of a lighted turf field at Westfield High School but they are also upset about the fact that funding for the field has been lumped in with district-wide roof repairs. Approximately 100 residents attended Tuesday evening's neighborhood outreach meeting, which was held at WHS and hosted by Westfield BOE president Richard Mattessich, facilities chair Jane Clancy and Westfield schools' athletic supervisor Sandy Mamary. Also in attendance were Bob Zoeller from Musco Lighting, architect George Duthie and Perry Di Piazza of Field Turf, who presented an overview of the …

People, people, the redistricting will go away by itself when the population and number of kids shift. In fact it will be gone within a couple of years for tehose crybaby parents who have to send their kids to Edison. Then, it will be other parents who will have to deal with the "horrors and damage" to their little darlings when another part of town needs to be redistricted. Then, those northside…   more ›

Absolutely correct, Yes Roof No Turf! The BOE truly believes that ALL taxpayers in this town will just roll over and play dead. It's about time that people began saying "NO!" to these luxuries. Yes! Luxuries! These are tough economic times, haven't they noticed? The sweetheart deal they made w/ the teachers is an indication of the total disregard for the taxpayers of this town. It's time to "JUST…   more ›

The third public outreach meeting was held Wednesday, April 18.

The Westfield Town Council and Board of Education, in conjunction with The RBA Group, believe they have created a feasible plan that would alleviate traffic and congestion around Westfield High School and Edison Intermediate School.  “We don’t have a whole lot of space to deal with,” said Councilwoman Jo Ann Neylan, Chair of the Public Safety, Transportation & Parking Committee. “These are feasible solutions.” Gordon Meth of The RBA Group explained the proposed changes announced at the special Board of Education meeting at WHS on Wednesday. First, the town proposes creating a bus “pull-out,” or cutout, on Rahway Avenue to ease the congestion slow caused by school bus unloading.    Meth also announced a plan to contact the New Jersey …

Charging people to park in front of their own homes is bizarre! I wonder why there appears not to have been any discussion of charging students who suddenly "need" to drive to school after 3 years of not doing so a very healthy fee for the privilege. The age-old solution of dealing with excess demand is to raise the price for the people creating the demand - not penalizing those who have nothing …   more ›

Firstly, the students should be more active (ie walking, biking, etc) Secondly, there needs to be a stop sign on the rahyway side of rahwya/dorian. Have you ever tried to make a turn from dorian onto rahway? the drivers headed north all appear to be taking the curves like the autobahn! Thirdly, where DOES all the money go? If not for the roof, the lockers and the rest of school are older than I …   more ›
