Gun owners and those seeking stronger gun control legislation voiced their opinions.
NJ Residents for Action Against Gun Violence were joined by vocal gun advocates outside Congress Leonard Lance's Westfield office Wednesday afternoon. The grassroots group, organized by Westfield resident Karen Egert following the shooting massacre at the Newtown, Conn.'s Sandy Hook elementary school, demonstrated to show their support for "common sense gun laws." Group says efforts to sabotage their work only strengthens their resolve.

NJ Residents For Action Against Gun Violence would like to clarify for the public any confusion surrounding the gun advocate group which showed up at our peaceful protest at Leonard Lance’s office. We have learned that this group is represented by NJ2AS -- New Jersey Second Amendment Rights Association based out of Manahwkin, NJ, a town that is not in our district and has nothing to do with our district. We have also learned that they purposely staked out our protest ahead of time for the sole purpose of trying to sabotage us and in their words according to their website “embarrass” us. We were there to represent the public sentiment of the 7th district for our demand for sensible gun legislation on a federal level for the public safety…

Dear Editor, I had the honor of meeting Ms. Bennett and four other representatives of NJ Residents for Action where for more than one hour we had what I thought was a cordial and frank discussion on the issues surrounding gun control and gun violence in America. During the meeting I expressed my willingness to consider a number of gun control measures as part of a comprehensive, anti-violence effort this year. I restated my support for a comprehensive study of our laws aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill, potentially including closing gun-show loopholes and tightening the background-check process on gun sales as well as examining our current entertainment culture where Hollywood and video game makers …

To the Editor: On Monday, February 4, a delegation of five concerned citizens representing the NJ Residents for Action met with United States Representative Leonard Lance and his chief of staff Todd Mitchell at Mr. Lance's office on South Avenue in Westfield. We expressed to Congressman Lance our desire to see a ban on the manufacture and sale of assault weapons and high capacity ammunition clips and a system of universal background checks that closes the private-sale loophole. Mayor urged residents to contact legislators to make their voices heard.
At Tuesday evening's meeting of the Westfield Town Council, Mayor Andy Skibitsky began by addressing gun control concerns raised at last week's meeting. "In order to move forward, we need to have a dispassionate discussion about a passionate issue," said Skibitsky, who stated that over the past week many messages were left at his home and office, several of which were "impolite." The mayor read a resolution urging legislators to address gun violence, which was passed by all members of the council with the exception of Councilman David Haas, who abstained. Group hopes Lance will agree to a Town Hall-style meeting in Westfield.
Westfield resident and single mom of two Karen Egert was so shaken and saddened by the mass shooting in Newtown, CT, that she felt compelled to act. The singer and musician started a grassroots effort that began with a candlelight vigil in Mindowaskin Park the day after the elementary school massacre. Today, Egert is the president of NJ Residents for Action, a statewide community-based group started by Westfield residents working toward meaningful legislation, which includes a federal ban on assault weapons and magazine clips, universal background checks, and stronger punishments for illegal gun purchases. Meeting began with a moment of silence in memory of Lee Hale.
The Tuesday night meeting of the Westfield Town Council began with a moment of silence in memory of Lee Hale, 88, who passed away on Saturday, Jan. 26. Acting mayor JoAnn Neylan spoke of Hale's lifelong legacy of commitment to community service. At the end of the meeting, Councilman Frank Arena shared his memories of Hale, noting that even while staying in Florida, Hale would call in to take part in the Downtown Westfield Corporation meetings, where he'd served as Board of Director and Treasurer.
