Third Ward Democratic councilman will challenge Mayor Andy Skibitsky.
Third Ward Councilman David Haas has announced he will challenge Westfield Mayor Andy Skibitksy for his seat this November. First elected in 2005 and reelected in 2009, Haas is the council's lone Democrat and a former member of both the Board of Adjustment and the Planning Board. According to The Westfield Leader, Haas stated: "I am running to help make Westfield an even better place to live than it is. We are all proud that Westfield has excellent schools, a vibrant downtown, beautiful parks, and caring, intelligent and skilled neighbors. But like other very successful communities, Westfield needs a town government dedicated to promoting openness, transparency and the active involvement of every member of our community, regardless of …

On Wednesday, Westfield Mayor Andrew Skibitsky announced he will seek re-election this November. A Republican, Skibitsky was appointed mayor in June 2005 following the resignation of former mayor Greg McDermott. He had been serving as a Third Ward Councilman prior to the appointment. He was elected to a full term in 2005, defeating former mayor Tom Jardim, the only Democrat in the last century to serve as mayor of Westfield. Skibitsky was re-elected in 2009, defeating former judge Bill Brennan. A long-standing but unwritten tradition, most Westfield mayors have not sought a third term. In recent history, Jardim ran for a third term but it was not immediately following the two terms he served in 1996 and 1998. He sought re-election in 2005…

Dear Friends, We are all unfortunately too well aware of the incident last Friday in Newtown, Connecticut. There are no words to describe the pain we all feel for the Newtown community, and the loss of innocent children and the adults who died while protecting them. A loss of this magnitude, undertaken in such a manner, is unspeakable. And while our thoughts and prayers go out to that community, it is also understandably human nature to think of our own vulnerabilities in circumstances such as this. As caring human beings, we want to protect our children and educators at all times and in all of our schools. It is for that reason that we wanted to reach out to all members of our community to remind and reassure everyone that the Westfield …

The following message from Westfield Mayor Andy Skibitsky can be found on the Town of Westfield's website: Hurricane Sandy Recovery Update: The Town’s recovery efforts in the wake of Superstorm Sandy continue. The Town is currently conducting a one-time town wide curbside cleanup of storm related organic debris, such branches and twigs, simultaneous with the collection of leaves. All hands are “on deck” as crews work 6 days a week on both sides of Town, rain or shine. To further expedite efforts, the Town has leased additional heavy equipment that increases collection and transportation capacity. In order for our crews to systematically clear all the debris from the 380 municipal roadways, they are working in the same patterned sequence…

The following message from Mayor Andy Skibitsky appears on the Town of Westfield's website: First, I want to take this opportunity to again commend my fellow residents for their resilience and compassion during and after Hurricane Sandy, now known as Superstorm Sandy because of its distinction as hybrid storm, a combination Nor’easter and hurricane. I have heard story after story of neighbors helping neighbors, one good deed after another. Such compassion is what binds us together as a community. Second, it is important for residents to know that in the aftermath of the storm, the police department worked very hard to keep our town safe and secure; and, as a result, unlike other towns, Westfield did not experience any increase in …

The following update appears on the Town of Westfield's website: The Town’s efforts to recover from the natural disaster, Hurricane Sandy, are ongoing. The Town is currently in the process of conducting a one-time town wide curbside cleanup of storm related organic debris, such as branches and twigs, in addition to conducting the first pass of the leaf collection program. Presently there are crews working simultaneously on both sides of Town, rain or shine. To further expedite efforts, the Town has leased additional heavy equipment that increases collection and transportation capacity. In large operations such as this, with 380 municipal roadways to attend to, the Department of Public Works must focus on whole sections of Town rather than…

Dear Neighbor: I along with Assemblyman Bramnick and the Council representatives from the affected wards visited the neighborhoods this past weekend that had yet to have their power restored to let them know that they were not forgotten. PSE&G and the utility companies they partnered with made a huge push over the weekend to restore individual circuits and house connections to finally get the remaining outages in Town resolved. To make sure that they have addressed all the outages, PSE&G “robocalled” all of their customers with instructions on what to do if anyone was still without power. If anyone reading this message knows of anyone still without power, please pass along the following message from PSE&G to them: “While restoration …

Dear Neighbor: Obviously the number one issue in Town continues to be full power restoration to all our residents and businesses. Since before the storm hit, I have been in frequent contact with our County and State officials, the Governor’s Office, and PSE&G to voice our collective concerns about the restoration efforts and to receive as accurate an update as possible about the progress being made. Please be assured that I will continue to advocate on your behalf until power is fully restored to everyone, every street is cleared, and we can, as a community, return to normalcy. The latest from PSE&G is that as of today, Friday, November 9, 95% of the outages in Westfield were resolved, up from 86% the day before. According to information…

But gee Marci. every day for years and year little black and brown kids were dying and there was no outrage there. Let me ask you a question. If in 300 days 1 black child dies every day from a gun, and then once every what? 3000days 20 white kids are killed (but all at once) who is more dead? And I love the "hateful" fallback all you limosine liberals fall back on when you're exposed for the …   more ›
