Pedestrian Struck in Crosswalk Outside Lord & Taylor

Accident occurred on Saturday, Dec. 15.

Westfield Police Capt. Scott Rodger confirmed a 36-year-old woman from Parlin, NJ was hit by a car in the crosswalk on North Avenue West in front of Lord & Taylor at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15. She was transported to the hospital by the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad. The driver, a 21-year-old Cranford woman, was issued a summons for failure to yield to a pedestrian in crosswalk.  The crosswalk, which allows employees access to the off-site parking lot, has been the scene of several accidents involving pedestrians. In August 2009, a Lord & Taylor employee crossing from the parking lot to the store was hit by a car driven by a suspected drunk driver. The employee, 25-year-old Clark resident Gina Marrotta, received head injuries and …

Westfield Town Council Approves HAWK Light for North Ave W., 7-2

Lord & Taylor requested a light for the safety of its employees and customers.

Shortly after Westfield residents Maria Carluccio and Greg Kasko addressed the Town Council Tuesday evening regarding the accidents that they believe have occurred on Central Avenue as a result of the HAWK pedestrian activated midblock stoplight, the Council approved the placement of another HAWK light on North Avenue West between Charles and Clark Streets.  Councilwoman JoAnn Neylan, chair of the public safety, transportation and parking committee introduced the resolution and said that the committee had been working with the county, as that portion of North Avenue is a county road, and Lord & Taylor since 2010 to improve safety in that area. Neylan cited a traffic report prepared by Gordon Meth on March 3, 2012 that concluded that a HAWK…

Ironically as I was passing Lord and Taylor yesterday about 5:30pm, three high school boys thought it was funny to dart out in traffic in front of me while i was driving. Of course there was an officer up the block that missed the entire thing, If I would have hit one of them, I would have been at fault, I think jay walking is the real issue here.   more ›

Proposed Lord & Taylor Traffic Light Takes Step Forward

The Town Council formalizes support for a new traffic light on North Avenue near Lord and Taylor.

The proposed traffic light for the in front of Lord & Taylor took a step forward Tuesday evening when the Town Council formally voted to seek county assistance with the installation of the light. The light, which would be placed near the parking lot exit and the crosswalk from the employee parking lot across North Avenue, would regulate both traffic entering and exiting the department store and employees seeking to cross North Avenue. The light has been a proposed topic for several years after a rise in pedestrian accidents in the crosswalk, including one fatality. The development of the light is still in the very early stages but town officials said they want to ensure the safety of both drivers and pedestrians. Town Administrator Jim …
