The longest-running parochial school track meet in New Jersey, the event will feature more than 800 student athletes from 18 area Catholic schools.
Holy Trinity Interparochial School (HTIS)will host its 34th annual Holy Trinity Invitational Track and Field Meet at Gary Kehler Stadium on Sunday, May 19, from noon to 5:30 pm. The longest-running parochial school track meet in New Jersey, the event will feature more than 800 student athletes from 18 area Catholic schools. The meet will include teams from St. Michael School in Newark, Good Shepherd Academy in Irvington, Our Lady of Sorrows in South Orange and Assumption School in Morristown. Fr. Michael Saporito says he imagines Argentinians are "ecstatic."
Rev. Michael Saporito, pastor of St. Helen's Catholic Church in Westfield, called this afternoon's announcement that Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, of Argentina, a Jesuit, was elected pope "a nice surprise." "It is very exciting time, of course," said Saporito. "There are a great many Catholics in Latin America. That's an area where the Catholic Church is thriving and I imagine the people there must be ecstatic right now." Holy Trinity Interparochial School, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, will open its doors to prospective students and parents Sunday, Jan. 27, by hosting Open Houses at both of its campuses. The Open House for its Early Childhood Program, ages 2 1/2 through Kindergarten, will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Mountainside Campus, which is located at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 304 Central Ave., Mountainside. Holy Trinity Interparochial School’s Fall Used Clothing and Toy Drive will be held as a fund-raiser for Hurricane Sandy victims. The collection will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, from 8 a.m. to noon, behind the school on Watterson Street, Westfield. Most organizations in impacted areas are now requesting specific items or monetary donations. Therefore instead of donating the items directly, the profits from the collection will be donated to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trenton to be used along the shore where the need is greatest. The following new or gently used items will be accepted: clothes, shoes, handbags, bedding, curtains, cloth tablecloths, linens, stuffed animals and toys. No books will be accepted. A team of eighth graders from Holy Trinity Interparochial School took first place in the 41st annual Roselle Catholic Scholastic Olympics on October 24. Among the eleven participating schools, Holy Trinity earned 25% of the total possible points and brought home the First Place Trophy for the eleventh time. The team was comprised of Kristen Cavallo, Sarah Coley, Veronica Cunningham, Sophia DiIorio, Sarah Fannick, Michelle Ferrer, Douglas Keating, Brendan McEwen, Lauren McNeil, Jackie McNulla, Olivia Ngo, Daniel Thek, Hannah Toner and Shannon Wieszczek. The Mountainside campus will not open tomorrow.
Power was restored to Holy Trinity Interparochial School, located at 336 First St. in Westfield, Sunday night. The school will open on Tuesday on a regular schedule and will be in session for full days all week. According to the school's website: There will be Before-Care starting at 7:15 a.m. The buses will follow their public school district. We know Scotch Plains bus will be available starting Wednesday. No information is available for other school districts. No cafeteria service until Friday (only pizza). Please pack snack and lunch until then. No plans for Halloween yet.
