Westfield High School wrestling coach Glen Kurz is optimistic going into this weekend's District 11 tournament. "This is the best team I've put on a mat since I've been here," said Kurz, who has served as WHS's wrestling coach for 15 years. The two-day tournament, hosted by WHS, begins at 6:30 p.m. this evening. Semi-finals begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, consolation matches start at 1:30 p.m., with finals beginning at 2:30 p.m. Kurz said he expects eight to 10 grapplers to move on to compete in the regional tournament. "Anyone who places in the top three in his weight class advances to the regions in Union next Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday," the coach noted. Two Westfield High School wrestlers are ready to grapple their way to victory starting this afternoon in Atlantic City.
Westfield High School wrestlers Colin Barber and Ellis Opoku are about to engage in the ultimate matches of their careers. Despite the pressure of going up against the best opponents in the state, both said they are confident and excited heading into this weekend's NJSIAA Tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. "They're right on track to win," said WHS's wrestling team head coach Glen Kurz . "I'm excited for it. This is a great time of year for wrestling. I think we're going down with two kids who feel no pressure. They both prepared hard to get here and I'm excited to see what they can do. They're both wrestling very well right now. Kalimtzis captures 120 pound championship.
With one champion, one second-place qualifier and four third-place finishers, Westfield High School wrestling team head coach Glen Kurz said it was a “good” day for the Westfield wrestling team at Sunday’s 37th annual Union County Tournament at Union. Westfield, sparked by two-time champion Mike Kalimtzis, placed second with 153 points. Brearley, which had the most champions with five, captured the title for a record-tying seventh straight season, garnering 180 points. Kalimtzis, who won the 103 pound title as a sophomore and then finished second as a junior after losing in last year’s 103 final, captured the 120 championship by edging returning UCT champion Ryne Morrison of Governor Livingston 2-1 in the final.
