Franklin Elementary Bests McKinley in Charity Volleyball Match

Schools raised almost $3,500 for 'Restore the Shore.'

Teachers from Franklin and McKinley Elementary Schools faced off on the Westfield High School volleyball court Thursday evening for a little friendly competition for a worthy cause.  Co-organizers Joe Paradise, a fourth-grade teacher at McKinley and Barb Piatkowski, a Franklin School physical education teacher, both hail from the Jersey Shore so when it came time to select a charity to play for, choosing 'Restore the Shore' was "a no brainer," Paradise said. Fellow teachers and staff members were eager to support those still struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Two Westfield Schools Named State 'Reward Schools'

Franklin Elementary and Roosevelt Intermediate schools commended for student achievement.

Two Westfield schools have been recognized among the highest-performing schools in New Jersey by the State Department of Education, officials said. Franklin Elementary and Roosevelt Intermediate schools were named as Reward Schools by the state this week. Only 57 schools received the recognition this year. Last year, 112 schools received these distinctions. The rankings are determined by analyzing data from the 2008-11 school years, including NJASK, HSPA and APA exams. High Performing Reward Schools are the highest performing in the state in terms of schoolwide proficiency and graduation rates.  "We are delighted to be a Rewards School earning the status of 'high-performing' school by the New Jersey Department of Education," said Franklin …

WSO and Franklin School Chorus Make Spirits Bright

Annual 'Home for the Holidays' concert packs Presbyterian Church in Westfield.

The Westfield Symphony Orchestra, with the help of the Franklin Elementary School chorus, delighted audiences young and old Saturday evening at the Presbyterian Church in Westfield. The annual 'Home for the Holidays' concert was performed for a sold-out crowd, which was taken on a musical journey that began with a triumphant 'Joy to the World,' hopped aboard 'The Polar Express,' and concluded with a spirit-lifting sing-along. Music Director and Conductor David Wroe introduced the works with energy and enthusiasm that echoed the joy of the season and was matched by the extraordinary talent of the musicians, particularly violinist Anton Miller who displayed his virtuosity on Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons.' Lance Congratulates Westfield Student for Winning Anti-Tobacco Awareness Contest

As part of the contest, students create a poster displaying a positive message regarding what they have learned about the importance of being tobacco free.

Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-7) today met with ten-year-old Sara Wheatley of Westfield in his Capitol Hill Office. During the meeting, Lance congratulated Sara as the 2012 State of New Jersey winner of an important tobacco-free educational campaign and contest.
