WHS freshman want to know how teens are treated while shopping and how much they're spending.
Girl Scout Troop 40769 is conducting a survey of teenagers’ spending habits and attitudes about downtown Westfield. Students between the ages of 10 and 19 are asked to fill out their confidential survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/TeensDowntown. Sample questions range from “What is your source of spending money?” to how they are treated by shopkeepers. The survey will remain active until March 31. Teens from Westfield and neighboring towns are encouraged to respond. Troop 40769 is composed of Catherine Bergin, Anna Browne, Alison Jaruzelski, Rachel Mattessich, Jenna Reed and Allison Worms, all ninth graders at Westfield High School. The survey is their “take action” project in response to an issue affecting teens in their community. …

Didn't get exactly what you were hoping for this holiday season? Here's a chance to buy it for yourself – and at a reduced price. Downtown Westfield's retailers will be offering "seasonal merchandise at deep discounts" Thursday, Jan. 17 through Sunday, Jan. 20, according to the Downtown Westfield Corporation. Bargains abound but unlike the summer sidewalk sale days, the good deals will be indoors. Many merchants have extended hours on Thursday.
Most businesses open at noon on Sunday but some may open earlier today if possible.
As of 6:40 a.m. Sunday, power has been restored to downtown Westfield, according to Sherry Cronin, executive director of the Downtown Westfield Corportation. Since Hurricane Sandy knocked out power to 90 percent of customers in Westfield, downtown merchants have been trying to make the best of a terrible situation, with many operating by flashlight or daylight. Cronin said many businesses don't open until noon on Sunday, but some may open sooner if they can gather supplies. "Manhattan Bagel is up and running," Cronin said.
