The Presbyterian Church in Westfield hosted the 25th annual Interfaith Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. commemoration service.
Hundreds of community members united to attend the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Interfaith Commemoration Service held at 1 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Westfield Monday. Organized by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Westfield, the event marked the 25th annual silver anniversary of the commemoration service. The program began with a procession reminiscent of the peaceful marches Dr. King organized in his time. Participants, including Westfield High School Principal Peter Renwick, marched through the downtown carrying signs advocating social justice on their way to the Presbyterian Church. Westfielders gathered for pancakes, sausage and coffee in honor of the human and civil rights activist.
Despite cold winter weather Westfielders filled the Community Center to enjoy pancakes and camaraderie in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Community Center Board President Chris Beck said the annual event always draws a crowd. "We've been doing this for so many years," Beck said. "People know about it and put it on their calendars." Donnell Carr flipped the flapjacks and served sausages with help from volunteers. Velvet Rogers, also a Board member, said proceeds from the breakfast help the Community Center offer its programs throughout the year.
