Dear Editor: There might be a light at the end of the tunnel for Westfield Commuters that travel on the Raritan Valley Line into New York, Penn Station. At a recent meeting with Martin Robins, Board Member of the Raritan Valley Coalition, he informed us that there was a plan to partner with NJ Transit and provide service by using some of the new dual-powered locomotives during peak Commuter times. This would be a dream come true for the Commuters on the Raritan Valley Line, because as of this date there is no direct service into New York City. ONE SEAT RIDE is only available if you chose to leave from train stations on the Northeast Corridor or the Jersey Coast Line(NJ Transit). Which means, you have to leave town and park your car at …

Diane Barabas, a Westfield resident, questions why only two out of eight Council seats are occupied by women.

The passing of two female icons makes one think of the influence they had on our Society. Annette Funnicello made her debut in the 50’s as a very young girl on the Mousketeers. Margaret Thatcher was a middle-aged woman who became the Prime Minister of Britain. Indelible! So why is still so hard to imagine women in Elected Office? The Mothers, Wives, Caregivers are the nuts and bolts of society yet many times women decide they do not want to compete with men or better yet, if they step out their initiatives are spurned? Women need to be included. Power is not necessarily the equation, it’s called INCLUSION! The Westfield Town Council seats eight members, two of which are held by women but there have been no new attempts in eight years to …

Dear Voters, At this time I would like to thank all of you who supported me during the 2012 Election Year. With so much uncertainty in our County alone I did my best to express the concerns of the tax payer. Not many residents realize that while they are paying a mortgage/tax bill that an increase is due to the escalating tax bill to Union County and not their Municipality. While I was campaigning I spoke to a local tax payer about this subject and he stated, “Oh, I just pay what that little green stub tells me!” A little Green Stub, how long have we been blind sighted? I propose to the legislators that we request a separate tax bill from the County alone as many other states do. It would be a wake-up call to the voters. Why should we be…

Diane Barabas addresses financial burden carried by Union County taxpayers.

Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat one must wonder why Union County Freeholders have passed a budget of $302.5 million dollars? It’s only $11.3 million more than last year? Even if the increase only means $90 per household as Freeholders claim, but it’s $90 that many families cannot afford. The weight of the tax burden has now pushed many properties into foreclosure or short sale, but the Freeholders still insist they need additional funds to manage 21 municipalities that are already struggling to maintain their own budgets. Successful tax appeals have been added to the mix and are painful for the municipalities because it means that homeowners are credited for money that has already been budgeted. First-time home buyers are …

The Republican ran in 2006 but was defeated.
Diane Barabas will take a second run at a seat on the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders in November. Barabas, who has lived in Westfield for 25 years, ran in 2006 but did not win. Freeholders formulate and adopt a budget for the county as well as set county policies and procedures. Additionally, they oversee county spending and functioning. Each member of the nine-member Freeholder Board is elected to a three-year term on a staggered basis, with three seats opening up each year. While she said she has a bit of experience with campaigning, Barabas said she hasn't "jumped back in" since her 2006 run. In July 2011, the realtor was overlooked by Third Ward Republicans who selected Planning Board member Mark LoGrippo to fill the Town …

New third ward councilman asked to address ward's most controversial issues minutes after taking office.
No sooner than Councilman Mark LoGrippo had taken his seat on the Town Council Tuesday evening then he was plunged into taking a public position on the most controversial issues in the third ward that he now represents. LoGrippo was formally appointed Tuesday night by a unanimous Council vote to fill the remaining six months of former Councilman Mark Ciarrocca’s term. Ciarrocca resigned last week following his confirmation by the state Senate as a state Superior Court judge. LoGrippo, the preferred candidate of the town’s Republican organization, was appointed over Board of Adjustment members William West and Maryalice Ryan, who were also submitted by the town GOP to comply with a state law requiring three nominees. LoGrippo is facing off …

Town Council to formally make appointment Tuesday night.
Third Ward Republicans picked Planning Board member Mark LoGrippo over Downtown Westfield Corporation board member Diane Barabas to fill the Town Council seat left vacant by former Councilman Mark Ciarrocca’s confirmation as a state judge. Republicans made the pick – expected by political observers since the two finalists’ names were disclosed last week – during a meeting Sunday night at the Gardens home of Assemblyman Jon Bramnick, the town’s GOP chairman. LoGrippo is scheduled to be formally appointed to the seat by the Town Council during a meeting Tuesday night at 8 p.m. in the Municipal Building. He will also fill Ciarrocca’s spot on the November ballot. Bramnick declined to discuss the specifics of the committee’s internal workings …

Barabas and LoGrippo are under consideration to fill third ward seat.
Westfield's Republican Party is considering members of two important local boards to fill the vacant third ward seat on the Town Council. Patch has learned that Downtown Westfield Corporation board member Diane Barabas and Planning Board member Mark LoGrippo will both be considered Sunday when third ward Republicans meet to decide on a successor to Councilman Mark Ciarrocca, according to a source close to the town Republican leadership. Ciarrocca is stepping down from council to become a state Superior Court judge. It is unclear if any other names will be considered during the meeting. Assemblyman Jon Bramnick, the town's Republican chairman, confirmed the Sunday meeting is taking place, but declined to comment on the candidates under …
