CoolVines Tasting Supports Winery Destroyed by Sandy

CoolVines partnered with Savory Spice Shop to create special gifts packs.

CoolVines is inviting the public to stop by its Central Avenue store to "Sip to Save" from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15. "We're having our friend Anthony Austin from Angels' Share Wine Imports come and do a tasting of the Red Hook wines," said CoolVines Lauren Ramos.   The Brooklyn-based winery was completely destroyed during Hurricane Sandy and the only way for them to raise enough money to get back on their feet is to sell through the stock that is in their warehouse, which was unharmed, she explained. "We have special gift packs available which we've collaborated with Savory Spice Shop to create. CoolVines Suggests Wines that Complement Thanksgiving Dinner

Big wines that won't upstage the bird.

With Thanksgiving less than a week away, CoolVines is offering some wine suggestions to pair with the turkey and the trimmings. The Central Avenue wine shop is featuring a choice of six-packs that cater to both the classic and avant-garde palate. This year's Classic 6-Pack Includes: German Gilabert Rosato Cava (Rosé/Sparkling) - This is a special project custom made for Jose Pastor. The wines comprised of mostly of Trepat, a local varietal, and some Garnacha. All vines are farmed organically in the Penedez region.  Carabella Pinot Gris 2011 (White/Medium-Bodied) - "It is all about vineyard site" is the belief of winemaker Mike Hallock. CoolVines Hosts Whiskey Tasting Tonight

Meet Master of Whiskey, Peter O'Connor for a bit of education . . . and a few sips, of course.

Peter O'Connor is back by popular demand. From 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, the "Master of Whiskey" will be offering a little lesson on how to purchase, taste, and serve different types of whiskey at CoolVines. Born in Dublin, O'Connor and has spent the last 15 years working in the industry. He started in a local Dublin bar, where his love for whisky and cocktails began. He has worked in some of Ireland's biggest bars, as well as in one of Sydney, Australia's high-end spirit bars. The whiskey expert has represented Ireland on many occasions, most notably in the 2003 Moscow Open Cup in Russia. In 2008, O'Connor was hired by Diageo - Ireland, working as a mixologist and spirit brand ambassador for Guinness, St. James Gate Brewery and the Bushmills …

How Generous Is Westfield?

A new study ranks the charitable giving of towns across the country. Find out how Westfield fared.

Westfield residents donate 2.7% of their annual income to charity. That's lower than the New Jersey average of 3.7%, according to How America Gives, a new study from The Chronicle of Philanthropy that rates each of the 28,725 zip codes in the U.S. by measuring income levels and charitable donations made by taxpayers. (The report used IRS tax record for 2008, the most recent year data was available.) Westfield ranked 3,185 for contributions, donating $36.5 million with a median family contribution of $4,055. The median income for Westfield was $152,132. Westfielders earning the least, in the $50,000 to $99,000 bracket, donated the greatest percentage at eight percent, while those earning between $100,000 to $199,000 contributed 3.4 percent …

CoolVines Pairs With Pairings for Four-Course Dinner

The all-inclusive wine dinner will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22.

Westfield wine shop CoolVines has partnered with Cranford's Pairings to offer oenophiles and gourmands a one-of-a-kind dining experience. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, the two will come together to host an all-inclusive four-course wine dinner at the restaurant, located at 1 South Avenue East in Cranford, at a cost of $70 per person. CoolVines' Lauren Ramos explained that the wine purveyor's general manager, Cheryl Rush, approached Pairings to see if the owners would be interested in collaborating. The wine shop, committed to offering "best of their breed" wines that represent great value, is hosting a one-day winery excursion on Sunday, Aug. 19. Hop on a party bus at either of CoolVines' locations—127 Central Ave., Westfield or 21 Spring St., Princeton, and travel to Brooklyn's Red Hook Winery for a tour, a private tasting and lunch. The winery, located at Pier 41, sources all of the grapes used to make its wine from the North Fork of Long Island, except Riesling grapes, which they acquire from the Finger Lakes. Westfield Farmer's Market Opens Saturday, July 7

The market will be open every Saturday through Oct. 27.

Nothing says summer like fresh fruit and vegetables delivered right from the farm. Or, how about barbecue, another summertime staple? The Westfield Farmer's Market has all that and more.
