Although the store sells equipment for dozens of sports such as baseball, lacrosse, track & field, swimming and basketball, yet its finest collection of apparel comes from its soccer section. Board will vote on $3.3 million bond at May 15 meeting.
The Board of Education is considering whether to approve a bond that would be used to fund the installation of a multi-purpose turf athletic field with lights at Westfield High School. Construction costs for the field would total $3.3 million, according to a presentation given by supervisor of athletics Sandy Mamary at last night’s Board meeting. The total would include all fees, landscaping and storage as well as the construction of minimal spillage lighting, bleachers and a batting cage. The Board will decide at its May 15 meeting whether to adopt the bond proposal. The field would be the district’s response to an increasing amount of participation in athletics, a trend that will presumably only continue given the expected student …

Increased funds would include a $15,000 increase in coaching salaries.
The district athletic budget will increase by about $42,000 next school year, according to a portion of the tentative budget presented at Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting. An estimated $15,510 of the projected $42,220 total stems from an increase in coaching salaries. The proposed budget allots a total of $1,168,874 in 2012-2013, which equals 1.2 percent of the total district budget. Other areas of the athletics budget will also receive an increase in spending. Student athletes praise BOE over new supervisor of athletics.
After 23 years of working with Westfield's athletes as head athletic trainer, as Sandy Mamary packs up her belongings and makes the move to the top of the Blue Devil hierachy, students will be looking at the move bittersweetly. Named the district's new supervisor of athletics, succeeding former athletic director Ed Tranchina, Mamary's appointment is being cheered by students, even though many said they will miss her hand's on role in the trainer's office. The supervisor of athletic position will assume all the duties of the athletic director in addition to also overseeing the physical education department district wide. The change in title was made by the Board of Education in response to guidance from the state education department about …

Head Athletic Trainer Sandy Mamary has been named Supervisor of Athletics, succeeding long time Athletic Director Ed Tranchina.
Sandy Mamary made history Tuesday night becoming the first woman in Westfield history to take the helm of Blue Devils athletics. The Board of Education officially confirmed Mamary, the high school's head athletic trainer, as the new supervisor of athletics starting today. Mamary is replacing the retiring Ed Tranchina, who has been in the district for 25 years as both athletic director and head varsity football coach. The position of supervisor of athletics was formerly known as athletic director. In addition to overseeing intramural and interscholastic extracurricular athletics, tasks always associated with what the athletic director has always done, Mamary will also oversee the physical education department. The change of title is part of…
