Westfield wrestler's season comes to close to Atlantic City.
It's that time again - the NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. A two hour car ride, a season of top-notch wrestling, and a pass are all you need to get in, making the event a showcase for premier wrestlers across the state. Friday night's event included the preliminary and pre-quarter-final rounds of the tournament. Any wrestler who scored a win in the preliminary round was guaranteed at least two more fights, but any wrestler that lost was eliminated. Some coaches, fans, and wrestlers question whether the format of the tournament is flawed, with preliminary losers going home after only one match, in effect making the trip to Atlantic City to wrestle once, and then to go home. Junior Christian Barber …

Westfield ends season with best record in WHS history.
After battling their way back in the game by winning the second and third periods by one goal, the Westfield Blue Devils saw their season come to an end on a goal that resulted in a bounce of the puck going Morristown's way. At 6:51 of sudden death overtime Jordan Klotz scored his second goal of the game to send eighth-seeded Morristown past ninth-seeded Westfield 3-2 in a Public A first round state tournament game Thursday night at Mennen Arena in Morris Township. Klotz, after a scramble in front of Westfield junior goalie Morgan Bungerz, got his stick on the loose puck and was able to push it into the net for the game-winner. Morristown won its second straight to improve to 15-10-0 and will next face 16th-seeded Toms River South Saturday…
Columbia beats Westfield 57-35.
The Cougars jumped out to an 11-0 start on Thursday night at South Orange Middle School against the Westfield girls and never looked back. They cruised to a 57-35 win over the Blue Devil girls, eliminating them in the quarterfinals of the North II Group 4 state sectional championships. "I thought they played really well tonight," said Columbia head coach Johanna Wright. "I was just impressed with overall game. This time of year, you ought to be playing like this." Westfield turned the ball over in each of its first five positions and were out of the game before the end of the first quarter. Up 21-10 headed into the second period, the Cougars allowed just three points in the quarter and scored 15 to take a commanding 36-13 lead into the …

Family enjoys trip to Vancouver.
The Olympics have come to an end and so has Jim and Jimmy Tanella's trip out to Vancouver. The father and son enjoyed a few days in Vancouver taking in the sights and sounds of the games. Mingling with people from 24 other countries, the Tanellas were joined by Millstone residents Brad and Danny Drew for the trip. The weekend was taken up by bobsledding. The quartet was able to get railside seats for the four man bobsled competitions on the infamous course where a Georgian luge athlete was killed hours before the opening ceremonies. The senior Tanella reports that the group saw the Russian team crash and skid by from their vantage point. Outside of the bobsled and trying to obtain the impossible to find curling tickets, the group enjoyed …

Westfield Patch editor learns curling.
As a journalist you find yourself in some interesting situations. A little over a week ago I found myself in what reminded me of starting blocks from my high school track days. I wasn't about to push off to run at Kehler, but rather I was balancing on a stone and a stabilizer, on a sheet of ice, about to glide down the ice, before releasing one of the things I was balancing on. That's right, I was curling. While I was doing something that to be honest seems a bit unnatural at first (aren't we taught not to glide on ice in sneakers), I was actually fulfilling something that has been in my mind for a couple of Olympics now. I have been interested in curling since the 1998 Nagano Olympics. Some of you may know I went to college up in Western …
WHS girls swim team co-state champions with West Windsor South.
A series of first place finishes by West Windsor South did not stop the Westfield High School girls swim team from waging a strong battle to tie the Mercer County team for the girls swimming public a state championship Sunday afternoon. Girls Swimming Head Coach Brooke Smith said teamwork is the main reason for the team's capturing of the state championship. Smith points to the constant second, third and fourth place finishes by WHS swimmers in racking up the needed points to tie West Windsor South 85-85 to share the championship. "If they had not stepped up and done what they did, the score would not be close," Smith said of her team. Westfield captured first place in only three events during the meet at The College of New Jersey. Suzanne…

Westfielder defeats Roselle Park wrestler for regional bronze, Atlantic City is next.
The goal of every high school wrestler in New Jersey is to take a trip to Atlantic City, not for a vacation, but to perform in front of thousands of fans in their quest for the coveted state championship. Westfield's Christian Barber will have that opportunity thanks to a solid performance in the third-place consolation match, where he defeated Roselle Park's Matt Krynicki 8-4 to take the bronze. Earlier in the quarterfinal round, Barber defeated Corey Stasenko of South Plainfield 3-2. In the semi-final wrestlebacks, Barber edged Aaron Velasquez of Morristown 3-1. Barber, a junior, came up just short last year, losing on a takedown in the semi-finals in four overtimes. That memory has driven him the past year. "I wanted to come back strong…
