The Judo champion will spend the next 60 days training for the fight of his life at the 2012 Olympics in London.
For Nick Delpopolo, what began as a childhood dream has become a reality. The Judo champion is headed to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London to compete and, hopefully, bring home the gold medal. Delpopolo, who grew up in Westfield, took to the sport at the age of 5 when his father Dominic enrolled him at a center in Cranford. The 23 year old, ranked number one in the U.S. and 16th in the world, secured his spot on the U.S. Olympic Judo team Saturday, May 12 after a dramatic fight to the finish against long-time rival Mike Eldred at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami. The Blue Devils scored 10 runs in the top of the fourth inning on their way to a five-inning mercy rule victory.
Starter Mike Mondon (5 IP, 3 R, 6 K, 3-4 2 RBI) knew that it was only a matter of time before the Westfield bats came alive like they have done over their last ten games. "We've been hitting well over the last ten games we knew it was only a matter of time till we turned it on," said Mondon. "We just tried to weather the storm until the hitting came around." The bats came around in a big way as the Blue Devils exploded for 10 runs in the top of the fourth inning on their way to a 13-3 victory over Union to earn their first Union County championship since 2006. The 59th Union County Tournament baseball final starts at 2:30 p.m. at Williams Field in Elizabeth.
Third-seeded Westfield (15-3) will take on eighth-seeded Union in the Union County Tournament baseball championship at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12 at Williams Field in Elizabeth. Westfield and Union, rivals from the Union County Conference's Watchung Division, have faced each other twice earlier this season. Union won the first matchup, 11-6, on April 5 and Westfield took home a victory upon their second meeting on April 29, 12-4. In the near six-decades that the tournament has been held, Westfield and Union are the two winningest teams. Westfield holds 12 titles, its most recent won in 2006, while Union has eight. The Westfield Blue Devils won both the team and individual championships at the 2012 UCIAC Tournament at Echo Lake CC.
