Westfield Schools Introducing STEM Camp

In a continuing effort to engage students in activities integrating the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), the Westfield Public School district is introducing a week-long summer workshop for grades 3 – 8 devoted to STEM.  Taught by Westfield teachers, it will be held July 8 -12 at Edison Intermediate School with a daily schedule from 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM. Workshops will include robotics, science technology, rocketry, Computer Aided Design (CAD), movie making and stop motion animation, and Scratch Programming (Fundamentals for Kids).  “Students will receive a high quality learning experience with state-of-the-art equipment and software,” added David Stoneback, Supervisor of K-12 Science.  Tuition is $250 per …

Westfield 7th Graders Win 2nd Place in Health Bee Competition

This year’s special guest at the Health Bee was Brenda Blackmon, Co-Anchor of My9 News.

The Germ Busters team, comprised of five Roosevelt Intermediate School students from Westfield, won second place in the United Healthcare/YMCA 4th Annual Health Bee Competition. They competed against seven other teams in three categories of health-related questions, and reached the final round.  The seventh graders, shown here with their $500 check, are (front row l-r):  Julian Mazzola, Stefan Sujanthakumar, Owen Heim, and Connor Smith; and (back row l-r): Joey Gabriel and Matthew Meusel.  The Health Bee, a jeopardy style, physical activity and nutrition competition that United Health Care and the Westfield Y sponsor, is in its fourth year. Westfield High School Students Recognized for Prestiguous Performance on National Spanish Exam

David Greer, District Supervisor of World Languages, K-12, expressed pride in the dedication of the students.

Students from Westfield High School earned a total of seven gold, 19 silver, and 13 bronze medals along with 32 honorable mentions on the 2013 National Spanish Examinations.  “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 156,000 students participating in 2013. Students from Westfield High School have a long history of achievement on these exams and were taught by Spanish teachers, Rose Calimano, Maria Garcia, Donna Higgins, Jill Mezzacappa, Liliana Pabon-Correa, Cecilia Pite, Brook Stites, and Bonnie Underwood. Westfield GLI "Hoops for Hope" Raises Awareness & Fund for Literacy

Girls Learn International (GLI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting gender equality and literacy throughout the world.

Hoops for Hope, an annual basketball clinic and fundraiser for the Westfield Chapters of Girls Learn International, was held this Spring at Westfield High School.  Girls Learn International (GLI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting gender equality and literacy throughout the world. Nine members of the Westfield High School Basketball Team conducted drills for girls in grades 4-8. The WHS Team also spoke to the girls about conditioning and how to avoid sports injuries, and they shared their wisdom on the benefits of sports for girls.   “It was a wonderful evening of fun and fitness,” stated Karen Lust, Roosevelt Social Studies teacher and Westfield Schools’ volunteer advisor for GLI. “All money raised will go toward literacy …

First Honors is awarded to students with an average of A or higher (4.0) and no grade lower than a C. Second Honors is awarded to students with an average at or above the midpoint between A and B+ (3.7) and no grade lower than a C.

Commissioner of Education Recognizes Westfield Students/Teachers in Trenton Ceremony

Superintendent Margaret Dolan said she was proud of the district's honorees.

New Jersey Commissioner of Education Christopher D. Cerf personally congratulated representatives from the Westfield Public Schools for "a significant contribution to school, community, family or other groups." The event was held on May 15 in Trenton at the New Jersey State Board of Education’s Annual Student Recognition Ceremony.  The Community Service Club of Westfield High School was presented a certificate for the Club’s continuous volunteer efforts over the past 7 years to provide assistance locally, statewide, and internationally to those in need. This year, students have served meals to homeless families in Newark and organized games and crafts with the young children; took part in hurricane-relief efforts by organizing donations of…

Community Invited to Odyssey of the Mind Showcase

Showcase begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16 at Edison Intermediate School.

Thirteen Westfield students on two teams will be representing NJ at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals later this month in Michigan. They would like to invite everyone to come to see their performances at an Odyssey of the Mind Showcase at the Edison Intermediate School Auditorium on Thursday, May 16 at 7:00 pm. You'll get to see not only them but all four teams of students that participated in the program this year, hear a little bit about Odyssey and see if it's something that you'd like to be involved in next year.  Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem solving competition that helps the students involved learn to set goals and achieve them, work together with their peers to solve complex problems and step out of their comfort …

National Honor Society Inducts 170 Students from Westfield High

In recognition of academic excellence, leadership, service and character, 160 juniors and 10 seniors from Westfield High School were inducted into the National Honor Society on April 25.  Principal Peter Renwick awarded the students with certificates and Les Jacobsen, NHS Advisor, presented NHS pins and charms.
