Meet your farmer!

John Krueger is making it easier than ever to eat fresh produce at home. He’s the owner and operator of Starbrite Farm in Sussex County, New Jersey, which boasts more than 80 acres of certified organic farmland and food. Not all local farmers can boast organic certification by the Northeast Organic Farming Association, but he does!

Krueger is the selected farmer for the Westfield Area CSA…or Community Supported Agriculture group… an alternative to big-box chain supermarkets that carry products with impossible to pronounce ingredients.

Members must pre-pay for “shares,” then, during the harvest from June through November, Krueger delivers a weekly assortment of vegetables, herbs and some fruit to a designated pick-up site. Currently, local CSA memberships are limited.

Krueger offers more than 25 years of organic gardening experience. Despite this year’s harsh winter, he used growing techniques to protect the harvest to minimize risk to members and optimize rewards.

As the Westfield Area CSA is completely volunteer run, all full member shares are expected to put in 5 hours of volunteer time. It’s a chance for members to thoroughly experience the sights and sounds of agriculture.

Those interested in becoming members will have a chance to hear from Krueger himself on April 27th from 1pm-3pm at 864 Bradford Ave, Westfield NJ 07090. He’ll share a description of his farm, goals and what’s in store for the 2014 season.

Applications are still being accepted but time is running out! A share must be paid for in full by June 1st. Visit http://westfieldareacsa.com for more information or email westfieldcsa@gmail.com with any questions, or to RSVP to the Meet the Farmer event.

In a time of near panic about food additives and unsafe agricultural practices, there’s no better way to know for certain what you’re putting in your body!
