Snow Doesn't Deter Haiti Fundraiser

Garage sale goes on in the snow.

Saturday's three inches of snow did not deter one Scotch Plains Avenue family from looking to help the people of Haiti.

Jennifer Principato and her daughter, Sophia, went forward with their plans to conduct a garage sale for earthquake relief. Bundled against the cold, the duo, and two of Sophia's friends, sold various household items and toys, along with baked goods and hot chocolate for the cause.

Principato said she encouraged her daughter to plan the garage sale in order to learn more about how to get involved in the community and benefit others. Learning about the Disney Give a Day, Get a Day program, which gives a day of free admission to a theme park for volunteering for a local group, Principato tied everything together for her daughter.

The mother/daughter pair gathered donations from neighbors and set a goal of raising $300 for earthquake relief. The predictions of the town being buried under close to a foot of snow worried them, but the late falling snow on Friday evening gave them encouragment.

The low snow count Saturday led Princepato to continue the garage sale, which by early afternoon had brought in $100 towards the total goal. The duo were joined by Sophia's friends, Talia Malinsky and Keya Ahrsanti, for the sale. In light of the storm, Principato will be extending the garage sale to Sunday and then again on Feb. 20 in order to continue to raise money for earthquake relief in Haiti.
