Light the Night with Holiday Luminaries

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary holds its annual luminary sale, starting Saturday morning.

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary Club invites residents from across Union County to visit the garage for the club's annual Luminary Sale. The luminaries – paper bags with candles inside – are used to illuminate streets and sidewalks on Christmas Eve.

The sale starts Saturday morning, continues subsequent Saturdays and Sundays, and concludes Friday, Dec. 24, according to a press release distributed by the Rotary. It will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., except Dec. 24, which is 9 a.m. to noon only.

As in previous years, the luminary kits cost 50 cents apiece in quantities of 50 or more, and 60 cents per kit for smaller quantities, the press release stated. The kits include a candle and paper bag for casting a holiday glow. Sand to ballast the bags is available at the Fanwood garage, as well, with help from local members of the Boy Scouts of America to make it easy to load a car's trunk. Some neighborhoods in the area get together and buy hundreds of kits to ensure effective luminary coverage, according to the press reease..

"We expect to meet any quantities that the communities require," Neil Schembre, chair of the Rotary's Luminary committee, said in the release. "Because we're offering a lower price for quantities of fifty or more kits, we hope that customers will consider buying generous quantities, for example, to line a curb where neighbors may be away from home during the holidays."

The Fanwood Public Works garage is located on Manfra Way, which is off of North Avenue, and just east of Martine Avenue. If using a GPS, set it to "Fanwood Place" or "Manfra Way" in Fanwood.
