Letter: Charity Baseball Tournament Set for Memorial Day Weekend

Jamie Marner is seeking sponsorship and volunteers for the event.

There is a Charity Youth Baseball Tournament again this Memorial Day Weekend at Westfield Gumpert Fields!

The event benefits local charities, and is held in honor of our past, present, and future troops as well as in memory of the late great Roberto Clemente “The Last True Baseball Hero”, who died on December 31, 1972 bringing relief supplies from his native Puerto Rico to earthquake stricken victims in Nicaragua.

Our annual charity tournament attracts talented 11 and 12 year olds Summer Travel Baseball Teams from Westfield to neighboring towns like Cranford, Clark, Florham Park, Madison, Milburn, Morristown and South Plainfield, to name a few.

This year will mark the 10th year of what has become a popular early season tournament and I am hoping that you can get involved with this growing youth based good-will event!

Proceeds benefit various local charity programs, including: Liam’s Room, Sister Pat’s Camp, Megan V. Beck Scholarship Fund, The Paul L. Jackson Fund, The Life’s Not Fair Charity, Local Parishes and this year, Roberto Clemente related Charities.

Last year, after many successful years of running the event, Paul Friel of Westfield stepped down and I, Jamie Marner, took the leadership baton for the tournament. At this time I am now personally asking that you either continue to support this event or consider becoming a sponsor and /or volunteer for this years’ event.

If you would like to do as much, please review and fill out the pages below regarding sponsorship and volunteering. Anything that you can do in support of the event will be greatly appreciated by many, particularly the benefitting charities.

If you have any questions regarding the event, please contact me at WFKOCBT@verizon.net or call me at 908-456-3967 since the tournament does need any help and assistance you can give at this time and it is true that many hands do make light work!

In closing, over the years the tournament has provided its beneficiaries with thousands of dollars because of the hard work of its volunteers like the local umpires who freely donate all of time to call each of the weekend games as well as the financial generosity of many like you, your families and your businesses! So please consider being generous with your time, talent and treasure again or for the first time this year in support of this worthwhile event.

Thank you since I very much appreciate your kind consideration of this request and remember that all contributions are tax deductible!

Jamie Marner, Event Chair
