Girl Scouts to Light Up Mindowaskin

Local scouts to celebrate national week tonight.

Westfield's Girl Scouts will light up Mindowaskin Park tonight in honor of National Girl Scout Week.

Starting at 7 p.m., the scouts from around Westfield will gather on the Mindowaskin lawn carrying luminaries and talking about the benefits of scouting in town. The ceremony will also include a photo montage of girl scouts in action around Westfield and a flag ceremony. A traditional friendship circle will follow the flag ceremony.

Several hundred scouts are expected to attend the ceremony, which is being held in other communities nationwide. Mayor Andy Skibitsky has been invited to participate in the ceremony.

Marcee Rogers, a girl scout leader in town, said scouts and residents are being encouraged to bring non-perishable food to donate to the food drive being held as a part of the ceremony. The food will be donated to a local food pantry.

"Whenever we do a girl scout event, we do a collection for a local service organization," Rogers said.
