Westfield High JV Volleyball Team Wins County Title

The undefeated team won the Union County Tournament on Nov. 1.

The Westfield High School junior varsity girls volleyball team was named county champions after defeating rival, Union Catholic, on Nov. 1 at Kean University.

The team easily beat Oak Knoll, Union and Elizabeth throughout the tournament, according to coach, Sara Liptack, but struggled in the tournament losing the first game against Union Catholic, winning, 25-21, and also won the final game, 25-16, which made them the county champions.

“By the third game we found our groove,” Liptack said. “Throughout the entire match, our captains Morgan Biglin and Caitlyn Serafin lead the team.  I must say that it was the best JV volleyball I have ever seen.”

The team was also undefeated the entire season, 19-0.

“I always tell my girls that beating the same team three times is very difficult to do, but we managed to beat Union, Elizabeth, and Union Catholic three times this season,” Liptack said.

She added that the team had a great advantage by having girls who had quite a bit of experience before trying out, as well as a lot of older team members. However, she said some of the freshmen really do shine on the court.

Come August, the girls will have to earn a spot on Varsity, so it is unclear at this time how many will move on.

The Varsity team lost to Roselle in the tournament.
