Westfield-Plainfield Rivalry Voted Out in USA Today Competition

Two North Carolina teams received the 'Best Rivalry' title.

After an avid voting competition to be named the Best High School Football rivalry in the country by USA Today, the Westfield-Plainfield rivalry fell short after the results were announced on Wednesday.

Both teams will receive a prize for making it as far as they did in the competition, but the prize is unknown as of now, according to the WHS Athletic Supervisor, Sandra Mamary.

“This contest is just a simple reminder of what a great town Westfield is and how much they support Blue Devil Athletics,” Mamary said.

The best rivalry title was given to two high school football teams in North Carolina that received 823,907 votes in the final round. The Blue Devils and Crusaders received 16,426 votes.

However, Westfield-Plainfield still had a strong following as they were named the best rivalry in the state, as well as the region.

The two football teams have met on Thanksgiving Day since 1944, but the rivalry between them goes back to the 1900’s, according to Bruce Johnson, a Westfield sports historian.

“It just says a lot about our school and community that they jumped on board and supported this cause,” head coach Jim DeSarno said after the teams won the regional portion of the contest.
