Westfield Beats Gov. Livingston for County Softball Title

Blue Devils roll to victory at Kean University.

The Westfield softball team was crowned Union County champions Thursday afternoon after beating Governor Livingston, 15-1 in the final at Kean University.

The top-seeded Blue Devils, who had not won the title since 1998, dethroned the No. 2-seeded and two-time defending champion Highlanders.

Westfield's Cali Chambliss and Julia Criscuolo each knocked in three runs to lead the Blue Devils to victory. Elena Scarano was on the mound for five innings for Westfield.

"It was a great team effort by the girls," said parent Patti Gregory, mom of Blue Devil Tiffani Gregory. "They have worked so hard all season and played so well together and with such determination."

When reached by email Thursday evening, Westfield athletics supervisor Sandy Mamary credited coach Caitlin MacDonald, who was an eighth grader at Roosevelt Intermediate School the last time the varsity softball team took the crown, with prepping the team for the tournament.

"Caitlin MacDonald is our head coach and she has done a fantastic job with preparing the girls to compete at a high level of play," Mamary wrote.
