Westfield Crew Completes Spring Season at Stotesbury Cup Regatta & Nationals

The Stotesbury Cup Regatta is the oldest and largest high school rowing competition in the nation; close to 1,000 boats were entered in the regatta, and more than 5,500 athletes attended.

Westfield Crew brought in some impressive results in the final races of the spring at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta held in Philadelphia, PA. Traveling down the evening before, the team dined together at the famed Hard Rock Cafe to have a few last laughs before the competition the next day.

The Stotesbury Cup Regatta is the oldest and largest high school rowing competition in the nation. Close to 1,000 boats were entered in the regatta, and more than 5,500 athletes attended. All three of Westfield’s varsity boats made it through to the semi-finals held on Saturday, May 18th.

Seniors David Adsit, Mike Paone, Drew Mellusi and junior Matt Lazzarotti gave it their all in the Mens quad semi-final, finishing with a time of 5:06.78.

The Womens Varsity Quad, consisting of seniors Jenny Amador, Marissa Jennings and juniors Sara Hoerrner and Sandy Choi, turned in a time of 6:01.29 in the semi-final.

In the Womens Double Lightweight Varsity semi-final were junior Katie Eliades and senior Charlotte Dreizen, finishing with a time of 6:13.20.

Sarah Sarkos and Emily McLane advanced to Nationals after qualifying at the Garden State Scholastic Championships in April. Nationals were held last Friday, May 24th in Camden, NJ. The double gave it there all and pulled in a respectable 6th place in their heat.

Westfield Crew is a club sport for boys and girls and is not part of the Westfield High School athletic department. A prerequisite to participate on the rowing team is to partake in the summer Learn-to-Row program. Sessions fill up on a first- come basis and are open to those who wish to become part of the competitive rowing team or those who simply wish to try  out the sport.
