Rex Ryan is staying with the New York Jets — at least for one more year.
Team owner Woody Johnson made the announcement in the locker room on Sunday after Gang Green’s 20-7 road victory over the Miami Dolphins.
Johnson’s decision ended weeks of speculation over Ryan’s tenure with the Jets that had many armchair GMs split.
The owner’s announcement choked up the 51-year-old coach, ESPN reported.
Rex, who has one year remaining on his $3 million per year contract, was mum about any possible extension to that contract.
Despite finishing the season with an 8-8 record, the Jets, along with many football writers, celebrated Sunday’s win and the Jets’ season overall. Ryan and the young, injury prone team had done a fair job with a team for whom many see a brighter future.
GM John Idzik cited next season’s roster flexibility and a surplus of draft picks as reasons to be bullish on the 2014-15 season.
As for Ryan, his career with the Jets appears to depend on it.
