Parents Approve Washington Track with 86% of Vote

Track project to get underway in July.

Parents at Washington School have given their seal of approval to the new track.

Parent Teacher Organization officials at Washington have announced that an online vote of parents showed 86-percent in favor for the project. The vote was taken after the Board of Education voted to give final approval the project.

The project is a gift to the school from the PTO. The quarter mile track will be placed around the soccer field behind the school. Construction is scheduled to start on July 6 and will last for two weeks.

The crushed quarry stone track will connect to the bike path and allow students accessing the school from Harding Street to walk on a dry path instead of on the wet grass. Parents at the school have expressed interest in using the bike path to create a running and walking club for students during recess. The school's physical education teacher has indicated that the track will be used to upgrade the school's track and field curriculum.

The $15,000 project will be funded through money in the PTO treasury. The school district will assume control of the track following the donation and maintenance of the track is estimated by PTO officials to cost less than $200 every two years.

PTO officials said the project will include additional drainage to move water away from yards on the Harding Street side of the school. The drainage project will also move water away from spreading across the field. The dirt dug up for the track installation will be used to fill in low spots on the field.

PTO co-presidents Bobbi Sgro and Steph Campanello both thanked the PTO's playground committee for their work on this project. Lisa Luzzi served as playground committee chairwoman this year.
