Mamary to Join Growing Ranks of Female Athletic Heads

Approximately 70 out of 400 ADs statewide are women.

The Board of Education's expected appointment tonight of Sandy Mamary as the new supervisor of athletics will place her as the first woman in Westfield history to hold the post, a growing trend statewide.

Out of the slightly over 400 school district athletic directors and supervisors around New Jersey, approximately 70 are women according to Frank Baldachino, the executive director of the Directors of Athletics Association of New Jersey. Baldachino said the trend continues to grow around the state.

Some of the female athletic heads are from all girls private schools, and a growing number in public school districts. These include Theresa Kostes at Hillside High School and Kathy Perri, the athletic director at Morristown High School. The athletic directors association president is Kim DeGraw-Cole, the athletic supervisor at Southern Regional High School.

Mamary, an athletic trainer at the high school, will be titled supervisor of athletics, a departure from the traditional title of director of athletics. Schools Superintendent Margaret Dolan explained the change by saying it is bringing the title in line with a growing number of school districts statewide and the change in duties to inlude supervision of physical education teachers.
