Five Westfield Flyers Run in National Junior Olympics XC Championships

Members of the track club traveled to Texas for the championships on Dec. 14.


Five athletes from the Westfield Area Y Flyers Track Club were part of the over 
3,400 runners that travelled to Texas for the USATF National Junior
Olympic Cross Country Championships on Dec. 14. 

In his second trip to Nationals, William McGlynn crossed the line in the 9-10 boys 
3k in 13:07 to place 219 of 329. Zachary Spergel, also repeating at Nationals, 
competed in the 11-12 boys 3k race and placed 235 of 391 with a time of 11:54. 
Cranford High School Freshman, Thomas Whitehead, returned to run with the 
Flyers for his second consecutive trip to the XC National Championships running 
the 13-14 boys 4k in a time of 15:35 to place 333 of 444, the largest field of the 
day.

Katie Whitehead crossed the line with a personal best 13:55 in the 11-12 
girls 3k race for a 357 of 405 finish. In the girls 13-14 girls 4k race, Mia Melao, 
in her first trip to Nationals, placed 290 of 377 runners with a time of 17:37.
