Boys Athlete of the Week: Nick Boyle

Senior swimmer is the glue of the team.

Westfield High senior captain Nick Boyle is the kind of athlete the Blue Devil’s swimming empire has been built on -- dedicated, passionate and an example for his teammates. He’s also taken a different route.

Unlike many other swimmers, Boyle swam club meets to help him with his high school performances. Not the other way around.

“He did it to help him get faster,’’ said his coach Jeff Knight.

Boyle was second in the 50 freestyle, third in the 100 freestyle and anchored the first-place 200 relay and second-place 400 relay in the 93-77 loss to Bridgewater-Raritan in the North 2 Public A final.

He’s this week’s Patch Male Athlete of the Week.

“He’s a good personality and everybody likes him,’’ said Knight, adding that Boyle has qualified for the Meet of Champions in the 50 and 100 freestyles. “He cares about his team. He’s a real good “glue’ guy.’’

By glue, Knight means to the bonding influence Boyle has on his teammates.

“He is high school swimming through and through,’’ said Knight. “He cares about the team and the legacy he will leave behind.’’

He swam 22.58 in the 50 and 49.26 in the 100 free.
