Blue Devil Soccer Camp Gets Underway

Students practice this week to get ready for next week's tryouts.

While the street in front of Tamaques Elementary School is busy with road reconstruction, the field behind the school is packed with soccer players getting ready for next week's high school soccer team tryouts.

George Kapner, the head coach of the high school boys soccer team, is coordinating an annual soccer camp which brought out 100-plus athletes in this week's soaring temperatures. The group has been focusing on various soccer conditioning skills, along with other aspects that Kapner will be looking for when tryouts begin on Monday morning.

"The purpose of the camp is to give the kids some prep time for their tryouts next week," Kapner said.

The soccer players have been divided into various subgroups in order to practice their skills and get into better shape for the season. Kapner is assisted in the camp by his assistant coach and several former WHS players. In addition, a group of Brazilian coaches who have worked with Keith Hertell in various soccer camps are also assisting. He said the extra camp coaches have helped bring new skills out to the players.

The soccer camp, which started this past Monday, will continue through this week. Soccer tryouts for the boys team at the high school will start this coming Monday at 9 a.m. at the field behind Tamaques School.
