What’s for Lunch?

Westfield's school system serves up healthy, well-balanced meals for the new academic year.

Are first-day-of-school jitters weighing you down? Overwhelmed because all the marble composition notebooks are sold out? Can’t quite get the kids up, breakfast made, and lunch packed? Well, fear not! Westfield’s public school system is well-prepared to handle all of your school lunch needs.

Edison and Roosevelt Intermediate Schools and Westfield High School begin their school lunch service on the first day of school, Wednesday. Students can look forward to a cafeteria menu featuring a “Boardwalk Bar” Cheese Steak, a Philly-style beef sandwich with peppers, onions, and cheese sauce. The sandwich is served with baked Tater Tots, an apple, and milk—all for an affordable $2.50 (intermediate schools) and $3.00 (high school).

Unfortunately, elementary school students will have to brown-bag it for the first few weeks of class. Lunch service for Franklin, Jefferson, McKinley, Tamaques, Washington, and Wilson Elementary Schools doesn’t start until Monday, September 21, but, the elementary system also has big plans for their lunch program. Their first school-served meal costs $2.25 and includes a Junior Turkey, Ham, and Cheese Sub sandwich with locally grown lettuce and tomatoes, chilled peaches, animal crackers, 100-percent grape juice and milk.

Both lunch specials are part of Westfield’s “Balanced Choices” program, which is serviced by Chartwells, a division of the North Carolina-based Compass Group North America. Their meal offerings “meet precise nutrient and portion standards that aim to reduce fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium, while ensuring that each selection makes a positive contribution of vitamins, minerals, and fiber.” Chartwell’s menu for all Westfield schools during the week of September 21 will include locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Lunch menus are posted online for most Westfield schools. So if you find yourself short on time in the morning, or the kids are complaining “Not peanut butter and jelly again!,” rest assured that there are healthy options available right at your child’s school lunch counter.
