Westfield Students Soar in Science Olympiad

Eighteen EIS students competed against hundreds of other students from 21 middle schools in 13 events.

At a regional Science Olympiad competition held at Union County College, Edison Intermediate School (EIS) eighth graders Natalia Zeller MacLean and Evan Binder won 2nd place in Experimental Design, and Sydney Gordner and Mark Fico placed 4th in the Mousetrap Vehicles event.

Eighteen EIS students competed against hundreds of other students from 21 middle schools in 13 events. The Science Olympiad class, which is offered as an eighth grade elective, is taught by EIS Science teacher Willa Schaefer.

“Throughout the class we work on activities that are centered on concepts similar to those at the competition, where students are given objects and a task and create an experiment,” stated Schaefer.
