Westfield Special Ed Committee Discusses Recreational Programs Wednesday

The free roundtable discussion begins at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23 in Edison Intermediate School's library.

The Westfield Special Education Parent Teacher Committee invites you to attend a roundtable discussion on recreational programming for children and teenagers with special needs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23 in the library of

Recreational programs provide children with an excellent opportunity to learn and grow outside the classroom. Children make new friendships and develop new skills in a relaxed environment. However, if your child has special needs, finding an appropriate, local program can be challenging. 

Join fellow parents and recreation providers to discuss all the local recreational opportunities and new possibilities in our community.

Featured Recreation Providers include the Westfield YMCA,  Intensive Therapeutics, Westfield Dept. of Recreation, Union County Dept. of Recreation and Autism Family Times. 

Highlights of the agenda are:·

  • Overviews of special needs recreational programming by 6 local providers including mainstream programs with shadow support, programming designed to prepare children with special needs to participate in mainstream programs, and programs specifically designed for children with special needs.
  • Information exchange session between parents, teachers and recreational providers to discuss programming that has been successful or unsuccessful and why. Discuss areas of need, untapped opportunities or creation of new programs to better address the needs of our special children.
  • Brainstorming session between parents, teachers and providers to determine what type of recreational programming would meet the needs of our community going forward targeting Fall 2012.       
  • A unique opportunity to provide input to local providers in the planning and developmental stages of key recreational programming for your kids with special needs. Come voice your opinions!
