After years of discussion, the Westfield public school district has entered the world of social media and unveiled its new Twitter feed @WestfieldNJK12 today.

Board member Mitch Slater, who, together with Mark Friedman and former BOE vice president David Finn, has been an ardent supporter of creating both a Twitter feed and a district Facebook page, said he feels "like a proud father."

Dr. Margaret Dolan, Westfield superintendent of schools, will discuss the district's foray into the Twitterverse at tonight's Board of Ed meeting.

In the wake of super storm Sandy, Westfield parents found themselves clamoring for information after the storm knocked the district's server offline, rendering the website and staff email unreachable. While parents were notified via the Honeywell Instant Alert system, many looked to Slater's personal Twitter feed and Facebook page for immediate updates.

Slater said a district Facebook page could go live as early as January.
