The Germ Busters team, comprised of five Roosevelt Intermediate School students from Westfield, won second place in the United Healthcare/YMCA 4th Annual Health Bee Competition. They competed against seven other teams in three categories of health-related questions, and reached the final round.  The seventh graders, shown here with their $500 check, are (front row l-r):  Julian Mazzola, Stefan Sujanthakumar, Owen Heim, and Connor Smith; and (back row l-r): Joey Gabriel and Matthew Meusel.

The Health Bee, a jeopardy style, physical activity and nutrition competition that United Health Care and the Westfield Y sponsor, is in its fourth year. According to Roosevelt Health Educator, Sharon Dorry, “By simply participating, the students are making a commitment to gain a greater knowledge of health and physical fitness and along the way, meet other peers of their age from the surrounding schools.”

This year there were 8 schools involved: Edison-Westfield, Holy Trinity-Westfield, Roosevelt-Westfield, Lincoln-Garwood, Hillside Avenue-Cranford, Orange Avenue-Cranford, Deerfield-Mountainside, St. Michaels-Cranford. The $500 Awarded Grant money for 2nd Place will be used for any health related materials/activities, which will benefit all the students in Roosevelt.
