School Roof Projects to be Completed This Fall

Roosevelt and Washington should be completed by the end of the month, while the high school will be finished in November.

The roofing work at three Westfield schools, Roosevelt, Washington and WHS, are on track to be complete this fall, according to Board Secretary and Business Administrator Dana Sullivan.

Completion of the Roosevelt Intermediate School roof should happen by the end of the month, Sullivan said. Adding that the base and cap sheet are 100 percent complete.

The cap sheet at Washington Elementary is almost complete and should be done by this weekend, according to Sullivan, but the roof should also be complete by the end of September.

Work on the High School roof is ongoing, as two small areas will need demolition. The demolition should take place during nights this week or over the weekend, Sullivan said.

The completion of the roof project at the high school should be done in November.

The Board of Education also announced on Tuesday evening the new bond referendum that will be on the Nov. 5 ballot, which can reduce the cost of roof repairs on the rest of Westfield Public Schools by 40 percent.

In May, the state released $2.7 million dollars in state aid for these types of projects, but in order for Westfield to obtain those funds, the public needs to vote in favor of an updated bond to December’s.

The bond is not an additional bond, Board Presidents Richard Mattessich explained. There will be no additional roofing work or projects added, he said. The roofs will be repaired either way, but if Westfield voters approve the “re-do” bond, the cost will be reduced by 40 percent.
