School District Extends Survey Deadline

Asks community for priorities under budget constraints

Westfield Public Schools extended the deadline until Friday for members of the community to respond to a survey to help direct the district’s five-year strategic plan. The deadline was originally Tuesday.

In late October, the school district sent the survey to a preselected group of community members. The survey asked community members to designate what their priorities are under budget constraints, such as facilities, class size, visual and performing arts, technology, or co-curricular activities.

It also asked respondents to rate the school district in subject areas, preparing students for post-high school life, discipline in schools, instruction in study skills, administrators and teachers responding to communications from parents, dealing with bullying, and counseling services.

The survey also sought to find out the role of public school system in deciding to move to Westfield.

The planning committee intends to report on the survey’s findings to the Board of Education at its meeting on Dec. 15.

Board member Ann Cary told the board on Tuesday that the committee had also selected 53 members of the community, including school staff, parents from each school and other civic organizations, to be on the strategic planning committee.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 17.
