Roosevelt's GLI Club Raises $1,300 for Education Advocacy Worldwide

The young ladies of Roosevelt Intermediate School's chapter of Girls Learn International (GLI) raised $1,300 as part of their "Hungry for an Education" advocacy and fundraising event held at the Garwood Shoprite, according to a press release from Westfield Public School.

As they bagged groceries, students spoke with shoppers about the global link between proper education and reduced rates of malnutrition - also providing statistics and handing out bookmarks to those leaving the store.

The proceeds will benefit their partner school in Afghanistan, proving school supplies and funds to support educational fundraising.

According to the release, GLI came to Westfield in 2003. The girls in the Roosevelt chapter meet year-round and are educated about the lives of children who lack vital educational resources.

They also communicate with students from their sister school though out the year.

“I am very proud of the work the student volunteers did. Raising awareness is as important as the money we raised,"said Karen Lust, who co-advises the Roosevelt chapter of GLI with Dominick Ceccio. "With the assistance and generosity of Garwood ShopRite owner Nico Sumas, the ShopRite staff and the community, we accomplished both our goals.”
