McKinley Turns into Hands On Science Lab

Students participate in annual science day.

McKinley School took a break from sitting behind desks and going over the three Rs on Friday for a hands on lesson in science.

The school's annual Science Day brought parent volunteers in to the school to teach students various aspects on science. Turning the school into a hands on science museum, the volunteer teachers - who included outside guests - worked to make science more practical for the students.

Dividind their time between various stations around the school, students gathered in the gym foyer for a study of chromotology - the study of color - using markers and water to separate the different colors out of one color. Moving to the lawn outside the gym, students learned about seeing eye dogs and the work used to train dogs for this task.

In the school library, students learned about ecology and how animals adapt to their surroundings. Down in the foyer outside the instrumental music room, students learned about light and the creation of rainbows.

One of the most popular workshops for students - and not for teachers - was the creepy crawlers discussion. Led by insect and reptile experts, students had the chance to interact with Madagascar hissing cockroaches, spiders and snakes during the course of the workshop.
